Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a flagship housing scheme launched by the Government of India to help more citizens own a pucca home at an affordable cost. Under this scheme, housing projects were planned across more than 2,500 cities and towns spread over 26 states. The objective was to construct over 2 million houses for eligible urban beneficiaries. Initially, applications for EWS and LIG categories were accepted until 31 March 2022, while MIG applicants had a separate window. Later, the Union Cabinet extended the overall implementation of PMAY until 31 December 2024, allowing more families to benefit from the scheme.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is implemented through multiple components, each designed to support different housing needs:
- Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP): Under this component, the state government works with private or public developers to build affordable homes. The focus is mainly on providing housing to economically weaker sections in urban areas.
- In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR): This component aims to redevelop land occupied by slums. Eligible beneficiaries receive financial assistance of up to Rs.1 lakh to improve housing conditions, along with access to sanitation and basic infrastructure.
- Beneficiary-Led Construction or Enhancement (BLC): Individuals who own land but are not covered under other PMAY components can receive financial support of up to Rs.1.50 lakh to build a new house or upgrade an existing one.
- Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS): CLSS offers interest subsidy of up to 6.50% on home loans taken from banks or housing finance companies, helping reduce the overall loan burden for first-time homebuyers.
PMAY beneficiaries are broadly divided into two groups:
- EWS, LIG and MIG Categories: EWS households earn up to Rs.3 lakh annually, LIG earn between Rs.3 lakh and Rs.6 lakh, and MIG earn between Rs.6 lakh and Rs.18 lakh per year. CLSS benefits are available for LIG and MIG, while EWS can apply under all components.
