Margin Trading Facility (MTF) allows investors to purchase shares by paying only a portion of the total value while the broker funds the remaining amount. The shares bought are kept as collateral with the broker until the loaned amount is cleared. This facility gives investors the advantage of leveraging their capital to take bigger positions in the market.
The interest charged on MTF depends on the broker and usually ranges from 8% to 18% annually. It is calculated on the borrowed portion of the investment on a daily basis and billed monthly. The effective cost varies with the size of the margin used and the holding period.
Yes, MTF stocks can be sold at any time during market hours like normal holdings. Once sold, the proceeds first go towards repaying the borrowed margin. After settlement, any remaining balance is transferred to your trading account.
You can hold MTF shares as long as you continue to maintain the required margin balance and pay the applicable interest. While some brokers may impose restrictions or timelines, in general holdings can extend for weeks or months. If margin requirements are not met, the broker may square off your position.
No, MTF is not limited to intraday trading—it is designed for carrying forward positions beyond a single day. Unlike intraday trades that must be closed before market close, MTF lets you hold leveraged positions longer. This makes it suitable for short- to medium-term investment strategies.
Yes, dividends and corporate actions such as bonus shares, rights issues, and stock splits are passed on to you since you remain the beneficial owner. However, some brokers may adjust dividend payouts against any outstanding margin or interest dues. Thus, while benefits are received, their utilization may depend on your broker’s settlement policies.
