People often move cities, whether it is due to a transfer, to find a new job, or for personal reasons. One of the biggest hurdles in this process is transferring their private vehicles across states. Besides transporting their bikes, individuals also find registering their bikes in a new state confusing and daunting because of the bureaucratic procedures involved. Transferring a bike from one state to another involves several steps, and you must also obtain the necessary documents and comply with regional transport regulations.

When it comes to inter-state bike transfers, you must also know about the different factors involved in transferring bike registration from one state to another, not to mention the cost of transferring your bike from one state to another. To help you navigate these waters, we provide a comprehensive guide about how you can transfer your bike across different states and the various processes involved.

When should you transfer your bike registration

Transferring your bike registration from one state to another is legally required if you plan to reside in the new state for more than one year. Doing so is vital to ensure that your bike is legally compliant with the local transport laws while also helping you avail of local services and avoid potential legal troubles.

What happens if RC transfer is delayed

If the RC transfer is delayed in India, you may face legal issues, fines, or complications during vehicle verification. It's essential to complete the transfer promptly when learning how to transfer a bike from one state to another.

Steps involved in transferring bike registration

While moving your bike from one state to another, you have to follow certain steps to transfer the bike registration. Here is a step-by-step guide detailing how you can achieve this without facing any complications.

Step 1: Obtain the No Objection Certificate (NOC)

The first – and arguably the most important – step is to obtain a No Objection Certificate from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) where your bike is registered initially. The NOC serves as a declaration that there are no pending dues, challans, or legal issues against your two-wheeler. Furthermore, if you have purchased your bike through a two-wheeler loan, you will also require a state transfer NOC from the lending institution.

The documents required to transfer the bike from one state to another include the following:

  • Original Registration Certificate (RC) of the bike.
  • Valid insurance certificate.
  • Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate or an Emission Test Certificate.
  • Genuine chassis imprint of the two-wheeler.
  • Form 28 CMV.
  • Forms 27 and 28.
  • Loan clearance certificate (if applicable).
  • Application requesting NOC for inter-state transfer.

You may also require an NOC from the police, while in certain cases, the Regional Transport Office may provide you with a clearance form that needs to be attested by the police department. Additionally, you may have to submit an NOC from the traffic police mentioning that no dues are to be paid by you for any traffic violations. You have to submit these documents to the local RTO, and the NOC will be issued after the necessary verifications.

Step 2: Transfer your bike to the new state

Next, if you have a scooty / scooter / bike, transfer your scooty / scooter / bike from one state to another. You can either drive your two-wheeler, which can be exhausting, or ship your vehicle to the new state.

Step 3: Register the two-wheeler in the new state

The next step in transferring the two-wheeler from one state to another is the re-registration of your bike. You must first visit the nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) and provide several documents, including:

  • NOC from the previous state’s RTO.
  • Form 29 and 30.
  • The chassis imprint of the bike.
  • Driving license.
  • Original RC, insurance, and PUC certificate/Emission Test Certificate.
  • Address proof in the new state.
  • Passport-sized photographs.

The RTO in the new state will then assign a new registration number to your bike.

Step 4: Pay the road tax challan

Upon registering your bike with the new RTO, you must pay the road tax per the state’s regulations. This amount varies from state to state and is calculated based on the bike’s age, engine capacity, and other factors. The new RTO will issue a road tax challan, and you can pay the tax as per the challan issued.

Step 5: Verification and issuance of the new Registration Certificate (RC)

After the payment of the road tax, the concerned officer will inspect and verify your bike. The person will also take an imprint of your bike’s chassis number for verification.

After that is done, the new registration certificate will be issued. You can either collect it from the RTO at a specified date and time or have it delivered to your address. With this, the process of transferring the bike from one state to another is complete.

Step 6: Refund of road tax

This step is optional and is relevant if you have paid a lifetime tax in your previous state. You are eligible to apply for a refund of the road tax after the re-registration of your bike in the new state. You must submit the following documents to the original RTO to avail of the refund.

  • Application for tax refund
  • Copy of the new RC with the new registration number
  • RTO Form Number 16
  • Copy of the RC with the previous registration number
  • Insurance policy document
  • Address and ID proof

However, this process can be lengthy and might require persistent follow-up.

Online vs Offline RC transfer process – Which is better

When considering how to transfer a bike from one state to another, the online process is faster and more convenient than the offline method, which requires visiting the RTO in person.

Charges and fees for RC transfer between states

To understand how to transfer a bike from one state to another, be aware that charges and fees typically range from Rs. 300 to Rs. 2,000, depending on the requirements set by the Regional Transport Office (RTO).

Tips for a smooth transfer

Here are a few handy tips that you can follow to ensure a smooth transfer of your bike from one state to another.

  • Start early: It is crucial that you begin the transfer process well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles.
  • Keep all the copies: You must keep multiple copies of all the documents.
  • Verify RTO timings: RTO offices tend to have specific timings for different services, and you must be mindful of the same.
  • Take professional help: If you are confused or the process seems daunting, consider hiring a professional RTO agent.

Wrapping it up

Transferring your bike from one state to another can be tedious and confusing and requires patience and attention to detail. By understanding and following the steps outlined above, you can ensure a smooth and legal transfer of your bike. It is important to remember that each state might have slight changes in the process, so you must verify the specific requirements of respective RTOs. With the right preparation and research, transferring your two-wheeler from one state to another can be quite straightforward. However, if you are moving to a new state temporarily, you will not have to re-register your vehicle for up to 12 months of relocation.
