In summary

In CIBIL score calculation, TransUnion CIBIL weighs 4 groups of factors: payment history, credit use, credit mix and age, and new applications. Payment history counts the most. CIBIL does not publish its CIBIL score calculation formula, so no one outside it can work out your exact score. But your everyday actions move each factor in a clear direction. Paying a bill 10 days late pulls the score down, while a year of on-time equated monthly instalments (EMIs) pushes it up. Changes show within weeks.

  • The scale runs from 300 to 900.
  • Payment history counts the most.
  • The formula is not public.
  • Changes show within weeks.

What goes into the CIBIL score calculation?

Banks and lenders send CIBIL data about every loan and card in your name. The CIBIL score calculation uses 4 groups of factors from that data:

  • Payment history: Whether you paid each EMI and card bill on time, and how late you were when you did not.
  • Credit use: How much of your card limits you use, and how much you owe on your loans.
  • Credit mix and age: Whether you have handled secured loans, unsecured loans and cards, and for how many years.
  • New credit: How many loans and cards you have applied for in the last 6 months.

Your income, savings and job do not go into the score. They matter to the lender, but not to the number.

Which factor counts the most?

Payment history counts the most in CIBIL score calculation. A single late payment can outweigh months of low card use. This is why the habit of paying on time matters more than any other step.

CIBIL does not publish exact weights for each factor in CIBIL score calculation. So treat any percentage you see online as a guess, not a rule.

How do everyday actions move your score?

You cannot see the formula, but you can see the direction of each action. The table shows common actions and their effect on the CIBIL score calculation.

Most of these inputs to CIBIL score calculation are under your control. Pay on time, keep card balances low and apply only when you need credit.

Why can you not work out your exact score?

Three reasons:

  • The formula is private: CIBIL does not share the CIBIL score calculation method, so no calculator can copy it.
  • The data keeps changing: Lenders report every 15 days since January 2025. Your score moves as new data arrives.
  • Your whole record counts: The same action affects 2 people differently, based on the rest of their reports.

An online calculator can show the direction of a change. It cannot tell you the number CIBIL will show.

What if you have no credit history?

With no loan or card in your name so far, CIBIL score calculation may not have enough data to work with. Your report may show "NA" or "NH" instead of a number. This is not a bad score. It only means there is no record yet.

To build a record, start small:

  • Take a credit card with a low limit: Use it for 2 or 3 bills each month and pay in full.
  • Consider a card against a fixed deposit: It suits people with no history.
  • Pay every bill on time: After 6 to 12 months, you will have enough data for a score.

Sameer's score check

Sameer, 32, is a hospital administrator in Lucknow on Rs. 52,000 a month. Before he applied for a loan, he looked at the data behind his CIBIL score calculation: a score of 742, built on 5 years of card use and one two-wheeler loan he had paid off. His sister's wedding needed Rs. 1.45 lakh, and he borrowed it at an illustrative 16.25% per annum, setting an 18-month equated monthly instalment (EMI) beside a 24-month one.

EMI = P × R × (1 + R)^N ÷ [(1 + R)^N − 1]. Here P = Rs. 1,45,000, R = 16.25 ÷ 1,200 and N = months.

TenureMonthly EMI (Rs.)Total interest (Rs.)EMI as share of salary (%)
18 months (1.5 years)9,13119,36417.6
24 months (2 years)7,11725,80813.7

Last updated: 28th October, 2026

Stretching to 24 months frees Rs. 2,014 a month, at Rs. 6,444 more in interest. His processing fee stays within Rs. 5,989. Sameer opted for 24 months, which kept the EMI at 13.7% of his salary. His record in the CIBIL score calculation would then build with each on-time EMI.

What can delay approval: a CIBIL score below 650 or existing EMIs that take up a large share of your income. Names or addresses that do not match across documents, and more than one loan application in the same month, can also slow it down.

How do you check what is in your score?

CIBIL score calculation is only as good as the data behind it. Check it this way:

  • Download your CIBIL report: Use your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and mobile number on the TransUnion CIBIL website.
  • Check every account: Look at the balances, statuses and payment history.
  • Look for errors: A closed loan shown as open, or a payment marked late in error, can lower your score.
  • Dispute any mistake: Raise it on the CIBIL website. The lender checks it within the 30 days that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allows.

Checking your own report does not affect the CIBIL score calculation.

Frequently asked questions

How it works

Changing the score

When is my CIBIL score updated?

Your score changes when lenders send new data. Since January 2025, lenders report to the credit bureaus every 15 days. So a payment you make today can show in your score within weeks. Check your report every few months to see how your actions are affecting the CIBIL score calculation.

Not exactly. CIBIL does not publish its CIBIL score calculation formula, so no one outside it can work out your precise score. You can see the direction of a change: paying on time pushes it up, and late payments pull it down. To know your actual score, download your report from the CIBIL website.

The rejection itself is not reported. But each application adds a hard enquiry, and 3 or more enquiries in a short time can lower your score. A clean report helps the next application. Find out why you were declined before you apply again. Fix the issue first, then make one well-prepared application.

There is no overnight fix in CIBIL score calculation, but some steps work sooner than others. Paying down card balances before the statement date lowers your credit use within a month. Correcting a wrong entry can lift the score once the lender updates it. Paying every bill on time builds the score steadily over months.
