Personal Loan Interest Rate Compared With Total Cost

Every personal loan interest rate is the yearly charge a lender levies on the amount you still owe, quoted as a percentage per annum. It is one part of what a loan costs you; fees make up the rest.

In summary

Read a personal loan interest rate together with the fees, never alone. Bajaj Finance charges 10% to 30.5% per annum on its Personal Loan, set on your profile. When comparing a personal loan interest rate across lenders, note that a lower rate with a higher processing fee can still cost more in total, so compare offers on rupees, not percentages.

  • The rate applies to the reducing balance each month.
  • Fees are paid on top of interest.
  • Your score, income and existing equated monthly instalments (EMIs) shape the rate offered.
  • Priya borrowed Rs. 3 lakh and compared 2 tenures.

What does the interest rate on a personal loan mean?

The rate is the annual cost of borrowing, charged each month on the principal still outstanding. As you repay, the balance falls, so each EMI carries less interest and more principal. A personal loan interest rate of 13% per annum means about 1.08% a month on the balance.

Why can a lower rate cost more?

A lower rate can cost more when the fee is higher. The table compares 2 illustrative offers on the same Rs. 3 lakh over 36 months, judging each personal loan interest rate by total cost.

What moves the rate you are offered?

The rate offered depends on how much risk your profile carries for the lender. The table lists the factors that shape a personal loan interest rate.

FactorWhy it can change the rate offered
CIBIL scoreA record of on-time repayment signals lower risk
Income and employerStable salary supports repayment
Existing EMIsA smaller share of income already committed leaves more room
Loan amount and tenureChange the risk the lender carries

Documents do not change the rate, but mismatched details can slow approval. Keep names and addresses consistent across them.

Worked example: Priya in Lucknow

Priya is 32 and works as a salaried insurance claims manager in Lucknow, with a monthly pay of Rs. 70,000; her CIBIL score reads 760. Her offer came with a personal loan interest rate of 13% per annum for Rs. 3 lakh to renovate her kitchen and bathroom. She compared 2 tenures before accepting.

EMI = P × R × (1 + R)^N ÷ [(1 + R)^N − 1]. Here P = Rs. 3,00,000, R = 13 ÷ 1,200 and N = months.

TenureMonthly EMI (Rs.)Total interest (Rs.)EMI as share of salary (%)
36 months (3 years)10,10863,89514.4
48 months (4 years)8,04886,31611.5

Last updated: 23rd October, 2026

A 4-year term saves Rs. 2,060 a month against the 3-year one, at an added interest cost of Rs. 22,421. Her processing fee is capped at Rs. 12,390. Priya picked 36 months, as the tenure, not the rate, decided most of the difference.

What can delay approval: a CIBIL score below 650 or existing EMIs that take up a large share of your income. Names or addresses that do not match across documents, and more than one loan application in the same month, can also slow it down.

Frequently asked questions

Understanding the rate

Getting a better rate

Is the interest rate charged on the full loan for the whole tenure?

No. On a reducing balance loan, the monthly charge applies to whatever principal remains. Each EMI pays some of it back, so the interest share keeps shrinking. That is why the total interest on a personal loan interest rate of 13% over 36 months is far less than 13% of the loan multiplied by 3 years.

The interest rate is the annual charge on your balance. The total cost adds the processing fee and any other charges you pay. When you compare a personal loan interest rate, 2 offers with similar rates can differ in total cost by Rs. 4,000 or more, so add every fee from the Key Fact Statement before you compare.

Your rate is set after the lender assesses your profile, including your CIBIL score, income, employer and existing EMIs. Strengthening those factors before you apply, such as by paying down card balances, can support a better offer. Compare the total cost of each offer, not just the personal loan interest rate.

Not necessarily. A personal loan interest rate is set on your profile, while the tenure decides how long interest runs. A shorter tenure reduces total interest at the same rate, as Priya's figures show, but it raises the EMI. Choose the shortest tenure whose EMI you can pay every month without strain.
