How to Apply for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

Owning a house is an important life goal for most people. However, the rising housing rates amid inflation make this goal an unachievable dream for many. There are two primary categories under which PMAY is classified: PMAY-U and PMAY-G. Under the latter, the vision has been to facilitate building concrete houses for people living in rural areas. The PMAY-U scheme has broader objectives owing to the more complex needs of urban poverty. These are the main points under PMAY-U that work towards the upliftment of the urban poor:

1. Collating private funding sources that would help rehabilitate people living in slums.
2. Providing a considerable subsidy to credit–seeking people so that they are encouraged to take the next step towards owning a house.
3. Building properties expressly for the use of the underprivileged and handing them over to those eligible at a reasonable pricing/credit scheme.
4. Encouraging collaboration between the private and public sectors to facilitate the construction of properties for people and designing affordable credit schemes for this purpose.

Notably, under the PMAY-U 2.0, which has been a highlight of the 2024 budget, the government has vowed to invest Rs. 2.2 lakh crores in the next five years.

You can apply to be included under the PMAY scheme online or offline as per your convenience. Let us first take a look at the offline mode:

Offline mode

1. First, you need to collect the application form, which you can either get at your nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or a bank of your choice. Different banks offer maximum and minimum interest rates for the PMAY scheme, so do your research pertaining to financial benefits. The best finance platforms charge a minimum of around 8% and a maximum of about 11%.
2. Next, you need to duly fill out the application form. Please keep in mind that you need to keep certain documents at hand, such as address and identity proof, proof of income, approved plan of the construction site, property allotment letter, etc. For a full list of the required documents, you can log on to the websites of trusted bank and finance portals.
3. Thereafter, you submit the form along with the required documents, and you are done.

Online mode for slum-dwellers

If you are a slum-dweller, you need to register yourself as such by logging onto the PMAY website. After that, navigate to the ‘Menu’, then select ‘Citizen Assessment’, and finally, ‘Slim Dweller’. You have to enter details like your virtual Aadhaar ID, address details, family income, etc. After you hit ‘Save’, all this information will be saved so your application can be processed.
 

Online mode for others

If you are not a slum-dweller and choose to apply through the online mode, here’s what you should do:

1. First, you need to understand your eligibility for the PMAY scheme. The rules categorise individuals living in urban areas into the low (Household income of Rs. 3-6 lakhs) and mid-income groups, with the latter further classified into I (household income of Rs. 6-12 lakhs) and II (household income of Rs. 12-18 lakhs).
2. Thereafter, hit the ‘Menu’ icon and choose the correct category you belong to, after you have carefully considered your economic status. After you complete this step, you need to update the site with details such as your address proof, household income proof, etc.
3. Finally, agree to the ‘Terms and Conditions’, enter the captcha code that appears, and complete your registration.
