What are government schemes in India?

Government schemes in India are structured programmes launched by the Central or State Government to address social, economic, and developmental challenges. They deliver targeted benefits — financial aid, subsidies, insurance, housing, or skill development — to eligible citizens, particularly those from economically weaker sections.

Schemes fall into two broad types: Central schemes are fully funded and implemented by the Central Government. Centrally Sponsored Schemes are co-funded between the Centre and states, with states adapting implementation to local needs and their five-year plan priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

What is the difference between a Central scheme and a Centrally Sponsored Scheme?

A Central scheme is fully funded and implemented by the Central Government — examples include PM Jan Dhan Yojana and Digital India. A Centrally Sponsored Scheme is co-funded between the Centre and the states — PMAY and MGNREGS are examples. States also adapt implementation of Centrally Sponsored Schemes to align with their own five-year development plans and local priorities.

How do you find out which government schemes you are eligible for?

Visit the official government portal at https://www.india.gov.in/ or the scheme-specific portal. Most scheme pages list eligibility criteria — income limits, caste, occupation, or geographic location. You can also visit your nearest Common Service Centre (CSC), Gram Panchayat office, or district welfare office for guidance on schemes applicable to your household.

What is Ayushman Bharat and who is covered?

Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) is India's flagship health insurance scheme providing Rs. 5 lakh annual cover per family for hospitalisation. As of 2025-26, coverage has been extended to all citizens aged 70 and above through Vay Vandana cards, regardless of income. Earlier beneficiaries were identified from SECC data. The scheme is active across empanelled public and private hospitals nationwide.

What is PM Kisan and how is the money transferred?

PM Kisan Samman Nidhi provides Rs. 6,000 per year to small and marginal farmers, paid in three instalments of Rs. 2,000 each. The money is transferred directly to the farmer's Aadhaar-linked bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). To check your instalment status or register, visit https://pmkisan.gov.in/.

How is PM Vishwakarma different from Startup India?

PM Vishwakarma targets artisans and craftspeople in 18 traditional trades — such as blacksmiths, potters, weavers, and cobblers. It offers Rs. 15,000 toolkit e-vouchers and loans up to Rs. 3 lakh at 5% interest. Startup India 2.0 is designed for technology-driven startups and entrepreneurs, with a new Rs. 10,000 crore deep-tech fund supporting Indian manufacturing innovation.
