Are you postponing the filing of your income tax returns, because you have not linked your Aadhar to your PAN card? If you haven’t yet, you may not be able to file income tax returns at all. It is mandatory to link your Aadhar number to your PAN card to file returns.

The Finance Act of 2017, further states that without the linking Aadhar number to PAN card, the PAN card of an individual will become invalid. This is according to section 139AA of the Income Tax Act. Effective from the 1st of July, 2017, every Indian resident must follow the above mentioned diktat while filing their returns.

Applicable to all Indian residents

The term “resident”, according to the Aadhar Act, is applicable to any individual who has been living in India for a period of 182 days or more in the 12 months immediately preceding the date of Aadhar enrolment. Thus, this rule is applicable to the 35,000 strong expatriate community who need to obtain an Aadhar number to keep their PAN active.

The Income Tax Department mandates the linking of the PAN with the Aadhar for filing returns. You can file your returns without linking your Aadhar number to your PAN, but it will not be processed if it hasn’t been linked. The deadline to link these vital documents has extended to June 30, 2018. Therefore, if you have not linked your Aadhar to your PAN yet, here is how to go about it.

You can either link your Aadhar Number and PAN online or via SMS 

Step 1: Log onto official website by clicking here. On the left panel, click on the Link Aadhar’ button.

Step 2: Fill in the details of your PAN, Aadhar and name as per your Aadhar card. Ensure you fill in the details correctly without any spelling mistakes.

Step 3: Enter the captcha code and wait for the verification from UIDAI. Your linking will get confirmed after the verification.

Alternatively, you can link your Aadhar by logging into your account

Step 1: Register yourself on the income tax e-filing portal

Step 2: Use your login ID, password and date of birth to enter the e-filing portal

Step 3: Once you log in, a pop up window will prompt you to link your PAN to the Aadhar. If you don’t see the popup, you can go to profile settings and find the link Aadhar URL in the drop-down menu.

Step 4: Verify your Aadhar details with the details already mentioned while registration.

Step 5: If the details are in order, enter your Aadhar number and captcha code and click on “Link Now”.

Step 6: You will now receive a pop-up prompt, informing you that your linking is complete.

You can also link your Aadhar through an SMS. You simply have to send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number in following format: UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar><10-digit PAN> and your linking will be complete in a matter of minutes.
