A Karnataka ration card is an official document issued by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Government of Karnataka to eligible households. It entitles cardholders to purchase essential food commodities at subsidised rates from authorised Fair Price Shops under the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

Beyond food security, the ration card serves as valid identity proof and address proof for accessing government services and welfare schemes across Karnataka and India.

Karnataka has split its ration card application into two channels — Seva Sindhu for APL/NPHH cards and the Ahara portal or Janaseva centres for PHH/BPL and AAY cards. This two-channel approach was introduced in 2025 to manage the high volume of applications more efficiently. An application fee of ₹100 per copy applies for online applications (paid to the postman on card delivery) and ₹70 per copy for offline applications. Karnataka's Ahara portal also lists cancelled and suspended ration cards, allowing buyers to check whether a seller's card has been cancelled before transacting.

Karnataka changed its application process in 2025. APL/NPHH card applications are now submitted through the Seva Sindhu portal. PHH/BPL and AAY applications are processed through the Ahara portal (ahara.karnataka.gov.in/nrc), Janaseva centres, or directly at Fair Price Shops. The old direct online application link on Ahara has been removed.

Step-by-step application process:

1. For APL/NPHH cards: Visit the Seva Sindhu portal at sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in and look for 'New NPHH (APL) Ration Card' in citizen services
2. Register for a new Seva Sindhu account if not already registered, or log in with existing credentials
3. Fill in the complete application form with all family member details and Aadhaar numbers
4. Upload required documents including photographs of each family member
5. Submit and note the application number for tracking
6. For PHH/BPL and AAY cards: Visit the Ahara portal at ahara.karnataka.gov.in/nrc, select your preferred language, and choose 'New Ration Card Request'
7. Enter the Aadhaar number of the head of family (eldest female member preferred) and Aadhaar-linked mobile number
8. Complete OTP verification, add all family members one by one with Aadhaar authentication, enter address details, and submit

Karnataka NFSA ration card holders can collect their entitled food grains from any Fair Price Shop across India under the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme.

The ONORC scheme allows migrant workers, students, and travelling families to access their entitled food grains at any PDS shop in the country. The Mera Ration mobile app helps ONORC beneficiaries locate nearby Fair Price Shops.

Wrong portal used for card category: Karnataka's two-channel system is a common source of confusion. APL/NPHH applications submitted through Ahara directly may not be processed — use Seva Sindhu for these. PHH/BPL and AAY applications should go through the Ahara portal, Janaseva centres, or Fair Price Shops.

Name mismatch between Aadhaar and ration card: Correct the name in Aadhaar first at the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra, then update the ration card at the supply office or online portal.

Application rejected: Check the rejection reason on the portal. Common reasons include income above the eligible limit, duplicate application, or missing documents. Correct and reapply.

Ration not received at Fair Price Shop: Contact the 1967 / 1800-425-9339 helpline. File a grievance through the state PDS grievance portal if the issue persists.
