Sensex Hits 35,000: What It Means for Your Mutual Fund Investments

How the Sensex at 80000 impacts mutual funds and what investors should do next

Your goals won’t wait. Begin your SIP with Rs. 100

Article 1

This year on July 3 2024, one of India’s leading stock market indexes, Sensex, hit an all time high of 80,000 points. This was a historic moment for the entire Indian stock market fraternity signalling strong economic resilience driving growth further. But, as a mutual fund investor, should you stay cautious or optimistic as the Sensex surges? Let us find out:

How Sensex got here

Sensex represents the 30 pioneering companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange or BSE. It is a great indicator of India’s overall stock market and economic performance. Launched in 1979 with just 100 points, Sensex has now climbed its way onto being one the best performing stock indices in the world, crossing 80000 points in July 2024. Moreover, this meant the index had a CAGR of over 15% per annum.

India's strong macroeconomic fundamentals along with its corporate earnings growth and investor confidence, have propelled the Sensex to new heights. The meteoric rise from 75,000 to 80,000 points took just 58 trading sessions, a perfect example of the fast-paced momentum of the Indian equities market. Yet, this emergence has not been without its own ups and downs. In this regard, the index has weathered global financial crises, pandemics, an array of political and administrative changes, and major economic reforms.

Key takeaways

  • Avoid taking any hasty decisions based on market highs and lows.
  • If you are nearing your financial goals, shift some of your investments to safer assets like debt.
  • Ensure your portfolio is diversified across various asset classes to manage risks and enhance returns.
  • Regularly review your portfolio and make adjustments as and when needed.
  • For new investors, stagger your market entry through SIPs or STPs to reduce the risk of investing at a market peak.

Current market conditions

The Indian stock market in recent years has outperformed several major international equities markets. The present P/E ratio of BSE Sensex stands at 24.3 as of September 2024. This reflects elevated valuations as compared to its historical averages. For mutual fund investors, this could mean that future returns might not be as rosy as in the recent past. Experts advise that while having a long term outlook for equities remains key, investors should be wary about investing in mutual funds for short term benefits.

How should mutual fund investors react?

Systematic Investment Plans

For existing investors, it is recommended that you continue with your SIPs for the time being. During this phase, SIPs help mitigate the risk of market volatility and provide the benefit of rupee cost averaging. Long term investors should stay the course as equity markets generally trend upwards over a 5 to 10 year horizon.

Diversification

During periods of market highs, diversifying your new investments is key to minimising your risk of incurring losses. For those with a long term vision, a well balanced allocation across asset classes, including equities, debt, and gold is recommended. And for those with a shorter time horizon, it might be wise to shift from equities to safer options such as debt securities and bonds.

Review and rebalance

As the Sensex touches new highs, it is vital to review your existing investment portfolios. Rebalance your portfolios if the current allocation of assets has drifted from your original financial goals or nearing its successful achievement. Moreover, regular portfolio reviews help ensure that investments are aligned with your individual risk tolerance and return expectations. It helps you avoid losses during market downturns as well.

Staggered investments

For those looking to enter the market now, experts suggest staggered investments through Systematic Investment Plans or Systematic Transfer Plans. This approach reduces the risk of investing a lump sum at a market peak and helps take advantage of potential future market corrections. Moreover, this can also provide you the added benefit of rupee cost averaging and benefit you from the power of compounding in the long run.

Impact on mutual funds and the way forward

The present Sensex rally greatly benefits the large cap stocks. However, mid cap and small cap funds face impending issues from bloated valuations. This makes such mid cap and small cap stocks more volatile. Historically, these segments have seen corrections when valuations became too stretched such as in 2018-19. According to some experts, most Sensex stocks are trading above long term averages that mean that there is a potential overvaluation in large cap stocks as well.

Therefore, selectivity and diversification with a preference for large cap or flexi cap mutual funds could be the safer option. Investors should manage their expectations and focus on long term goals while staying cautious as short term corrections are imminent after a prolonged period of market high.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop my SIPs after the Sensex crossed 80,000?

No, it is recommended that you continue with your SIPs even now. SIPs are great at mitigating volatility through rupee cost averaging and support long term wealth creation despite market highs and lows.

Is it the right time to invest in mutual funds with Sensex at an all-time high?

It is better to stagger investments through SIPs or STPs rather than make a lump sum investment during market highs. This largely reduces your risk of entering the market at a peak and helps you benefit from potential market corrections.

How should I adjust my mutual fund portfolio after the Sensex surge?

Review and rebalance your portfolio as and when needed. Consider diversifying across asset classes such as debt securities or gold bonds. Be aware of mid cap and small cap funds due to higher risk profiles.
