What is the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) is a government health insurance scheme launched by the Government of India in September 2018. It offers a health cover of Rs. 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation. The scheme is aimed at economically vulnerable families identified through the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011, and covers more than 12 crore families across India. Treatment under the scheme is cashless and paperless at empanelled government and private hospitals nationwide.

What is covered under the Ayushman card

The Ayushman card covers a wide range of hospitalisation related expenses, including:

  • Medical examination, consultation, and in-patient treatment
  • Pre-hospitalisation expenses for up to 3 days
  • Post-hospitalisation expenses for up to 15 days, including medicines and diagnostics
  • Accommodation charges during the hospital stay
  • Intensive and non-intensive care services
  • All pre-existing medical conditions, covered from day one of enrolment, with no waiting period
  • No restriction on family size, age, or gender for eligible households

Since September 2024, senior citizens aged 70 years and above are also eligible for an additional Rs. 5 lakh cover per year under the scheme, regardless of their income, following approval by the Union Cabinet.

Certain treatments, such as outpatient consultations, are generally not covered. For the complete list of inclusions and exclusions, refer to the official PM-JAY website.

How to check the Ayushman card hospital list

The list of hospitals empanelled under PM-JAY is maintained and updated by the National Health Authority (NHA) and the respective State Health Authorities. Since hospitals can be added, suspended, or removed from the network at any time, the most reliable way to check the current list is directly on the official government portal.

To check the hospital list:

  1. Visit the official PM-JAY hospital portal at hospitals.pmjay.gov.in
  2. Select your state and district
  3. Choose the hospital type, such as government or private, if needed
  4. Enter the required details and complete the captcha
  5. View or download the current list of empanelled hospitals in your area

We recommend checking this list closer to your treatment date, since empanelment status can change. Please do not rely solely on any hospital list published outside the official PM-JAY or State Health Authority websites, including this page.

Types of hospitals under the PM-JAY network

Hospitals empanelled under PM-JAY generally fall into a few broad categories:

Hospital typeDescription
Government hospitalsPublic healthcare facilities run by central, state, or local government bodies
Private hospitalsApproved private hospitals that meet PM-JAY's quality and infrastructure standards
Specialised hospitalsFacilities focused on specific areas, such as cardiology, oncology, or orthopaedics
Multi-specialty hospitalsHospitals offering a wide range of treatments and procedures under one roof

Empanelment for each hospital is approved by the respective State Health Authority, based on compliance with the scheme's guidelines.

Who is eligible for an Ayushman card

Eligibility for PM-JAY is primarily based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data, which identifies economically vulnerable households in rural and urban areas. Broadly, eligible groups include:

  • Rural households meeting specific deprivation criteria under SECC 2011
  • Urban households in defined occupational categories, such as domestic workers, street vendors, and construction workers
  • Senior citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of income, as per the 2024 expansion

There is no restriction on family size, age, or gender for eligible households. To confirm your eligibility, you can check your status using your mobile number or ration card details on the official PM-JAY portal.

Can I get cashless treatment for emergencies?

Absolutely. Eligible emergencies can be treated cashlessly at empanelled hospitals under PMJAY. Ensure the hospital is on the empanelled list before proceeding.

How to update incorrect details in the Ayushman Card?

Visit the official PMJAY portal or call the helpline. Be ready to provide your Aadhaar and other required documents for corrections.

What if my nearest hospital is not empanelled?

Additionally, the repayment delay is reported to credit bureaus, which damages your personal CIBIL score within 30 days.

How to complain about overcharging by empanelled hospitals?

If an empanelled hospital overcharges, file a grievance through the official PMJAY helpline or website support portal.
