Debt Consolidation With a Personal Loan: How to Check the Saving

Debt consolidation means you take one loan and use it to pay off 3 or more debts. It saves money only when the new rate, fee and tenure cost less than the debts you close.

In summary

Debt consolidation replaces 3 or more bills with one equated monthly instalment (EMI). It pays off only if one loan costs less overall than the debts it replaces. In the example below, 3 debts of Rs. 2.35 lakh carry a weighted rate of 33.8% a year. One loan at 14.75% over 24 months cuts the monthly outflow from Rs. 15,531 to Rs. 11,366. Total interest falls by about Rs. 58,000, even after the processing fee.

  • List every debt with its rate and balance.
  • Count the fee in the new loan's cost.
  • Pick the shortest tenure you can carry.
  • Stop using the cleared credit card.

How does debt consolidation work?

You take one new loan. In debt consolidation, you use it to pay off your credit card balance, app loans and other small debts in full. After that, you pay a single equated monthly instalment (EMI) to one lender, on one date.

The debt consolidation process has 4 steps:

  • First, list your debts: Write down each balance, its yearly rate and its monthly payment.
  • Second, get one offer: Apply for one loan that covers the total.
  • Third, pay each debt off: Use the loan money to close each debt on the day it arrives.
  • Fourth, collect the closure papers: Ask each lender for a no-dues letter and keep it safe.

Debt consolidation does not reduce what you owe on day one. It changes the rate, the number of payments and the date by which you are debt-free.

Which debts are worth consolidating?

Some debts cost far more than a personal loan. Others cost less, and moving them would raise your interest. Sort your debts into 2 groups before you plan debt consolidation.

Worth moving into one loan:

  • Credit card balances: Card interest runs at about 3% to 3.75% a month, which is 36% to 45% a year.
  • App loans and short loans with high rates: Some short digital loans charge 24% a year or more.
  • 3 or more small loans with different dates: Even at similar rates, debt consolidation gives you one date and lowers the risk of a missed payment.

Better left alone:

  • A home loan or a loan against property: These carry lower rates than an unsecured loan.
  • A no-cost EMI that ends soon: You pay no interest on it, so debt consolidation adds cost here.
  • A loan with a high foreclosure charge: Check the charge first, as it can cancel the saving.

How do you check the saving?

To test debt consolidation, compare 2 numbers: what you pay each month, and the total interest left. The table shows 3 sample debts that add up to Rs. 2.35 lakh. The card figure assumes you pay the 5% minimum due each month.

DebtBalance (Rs.)Yearly ratePaid each month (Rs.)Interest left to pay (Rs.)
Credit card balance1,10,00042%5,500 (5% minimum due)82,488 over 35 months
App loan55,00030%5,362 over 12 months9,342
Consumer durable loan70,00024%4,669 over 18 months14,045
Total2,35,00033.8% (weighted)15,5311,05,875

Last updated: 27th October, 2026

These 3 debts take Rs. 15,531 a month. The card alone runs for nearly 3 years at the minimum payment. If you take on no new debt, you would still pay Rs. 1,05,875 in interest.

Now compare that with one loan. Then add the processing fee to the interest on one new loan. The fee comes out of the loan amount, so plan for it when you choose how much to borrow. If the new total is lower, debt consolidation saves you money.

Deepa's three debts

Deepa, 34, is a salaried staff nurse in Kochi. Her monthly salary is Rs. 58,000, and her CIBIL score is 741. A family wedding and a broken fridge left her with the 3 debts in the table. She chose debt consolidation with one loan of Rs. 2,35,000 at an illustrative 14.75% per annum and compared 2 tenures.

EMI = P × R × (1 + R)^N ÷ [(1 + R)^N − 1]. Here P = Rs. 2,35,000, R = 14.75 ÷ 1,200 and N = months.

TenureMonthly EMI (Rs.)Total interest (Rs.)EMI as share of salary (%)
24 months (2 years)11,36637,79519.6
36 months (3 years)8,11857,23414.0

Last updated: 27th October, 2026

Over 24 months, debt consolidation cuts her monthly outflow from Rs. 15,531 to Rs. 11,366. Her interest falls from Rs. 1,05,875 to Rs. 37,795. A processing fee of up to Rs. 9,706 still leaves a saving of about Rs. 58,000. A 36-month term would shave Rs. 3,248 off the EMI while adding Rs. 19,439 of interest. Deepa chose 24 months.

What can delay approval: a CIBIL score below 650 or existing EMIs that take up a large share of your income. Names or addresses that do not match across documents, and more than one loan application in the same month, can also slow it down.

What can cancel the saving?

Debt consolidation can cost more than it saves. Watch for these 4 traps:

  • A longer tenure than you need: A lower EMI over more years can add more interest than you save on the rate.
  • Fees on both ends: Add the new loan's processing fee and any foreclosure charge on the old loans.
  • Borrowing more than the debts: Extra money for other spending turns a repair into new debt.
  • Using the cleared card again: If the card fills up again, you carry the new loan and the card.

Check each trap before you sign a debt consolidation loan. Read the Key Fact Statement for the annual percentage rate, the fee and the total repayable.

How do you stay debt-free after consolidating?

Debt consolidation closes old debts. Your habits decide whether they stay closed. Follow these steps for the full tenure:

  • Lower the card limit or close the card: Keep one card for emergencies and set a low limit on it.
  • Set the EMI date after payday: Choose a date 2 or 3 days after your salary arrives, so the debit clears.
  • Turn on auto-debit for every bill: One missed bill can undo the gains on your credit report.
  • Build a small emergency fund: Save one EMI a month in a separate account, so the next surprise does not go on a card.
  • Check your credit report after 2 months: Make sure each old debt shows as "closed".

Debt consolidation also helps your credit report over time. Lower card balances and steady EMIs show lenders a cleaner record.

Frequently asked questions

Before you consolidate

After you consolidate

Does debt consolidation lower my credit score?

Your score may dip a little when you apply, because the lender makes a hard enquiry. After that, debt consolidation can help. Your card balance falls to zero, and each on-time EMI adds to your record. The score improves faster if you keep the cleared card's balance low and make no new applications for 6 months.

Borrow the exact total of the debts you plan to close, plus enough to cover the processing fee. Ask each lender for a closure figure on the day you apply, as balances change each month. Do not borrow extra for other spending, as that adds to the debt you are trying to clear.

Not always. After debt consolidation, an old card with a long, clean record helps your credit history. If you trust yourself to keep the balance low, keep the card and lower its limit. If the card led to the debt, close it once the balance is zero and ask the issuer for a closure letter.

You pay a bounce charge plus penal interest on the overdue sum, and the lender reports the delay to the credit bureaus. One missed EMI can undo the gains of debt consolidation. Set up auto-debit, keep one EMI as a buffer in your account and call the lender early if you expect trouble paying.
