Fixing camera flickering is faster when you work through settings in a logical sequence rather than trying random adjustments. These steps apply to DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and smartphones. Step 1 — Enable anti-flicker mode if available Most modern cameras and many Android smartphones include an anti-flicker or flicker-reduction setting in the camera menu or exposure controls. Enable this first — it is the fastest fix and requires no manual adjustment. On DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, look under Exposure or Shooting settings. On Android smartphones, it is typically found in Pro mode under the shutter or exposure controls.
Step 2 — Switch to Pro or Manual mode Auto modes continuously adjust ISO, shutter speed, and white balance between frames. This works well outdoors but creates instability under artificial lighting. Switching to Pro or Manual mode locks your settings so each frame is exposed identically.
Step 3 — Adjust shutter speed to match your lighting frequency In India (50Hz mains power), set shutter speed to 1/50 sec or 1/100 sec for indoor shooting. If you are shooting video, set your frame rate to 25fps or 50fps. Avoid intermediate values such as 1/60 sec or 1/80 sec, which will create or worsen flicker under 50Hz lighting.
Step 4 — Set ISO and white balance manually Auto ISO can fluctuate between frames if the scene brightness varies. Set a fixed ISO appropriate to your lighting (ISO 400–800 for indoor artificial light). Set white balance to the correct preset — Fluorescent, Tungsten, or LED — rather than leaving it on Auto White Balance, which can shift between frames and contribute to perceived flicker.
Step 5 — Update your camera app or firmware On smartphones, update the camera app to the latest version via the Play Store or App Store. On DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, check the manufacturer's website for firmware updates and install the most recent version. Many flickering issues reported after a software change are fixed in a subsequent patch.
Step 6 — Change or improve the lighting source If steps 1–5 do not resolve the flicker, the light source itself may be the problem. Some LED bulbs pulse at irregular frequencies that do not align with any standard shutter speed. Replace the light source with a higher-quality LED or a tungsten bulb, or move the shoot to a location with natural light or studio-quality continuous lighting.
