Issued by UIDAI or the Unique Identification Authority of India, Aadhaar is a 12-digit number provided to every Indian citizen. The sole purpose of the Aadhaar is to help determine a person’s identity while making it easier for them to opt for government welfare schemes.

If you still don’t have an Aadhaar card and want to apply for a new one online or offline, here is everything you need to know about the process.

Key takeaways:

  1. You can easily apply for a new Aadhaar card both online and offline.
  2. Even when applying online, individuals would need to visit an Aadhaar Enrollment Centre to record their biometric details like iris and fingerprints.
  3. Citizens need to have their identity, address, and birth proof handy when applying for a new Aadhaar card.

Process to apply for an Aadhaar card offline

  1. Start by visiting the official website of UIDAI.
  2. You need to enter the state, PIN code, locality, or district to know the nearest Aadhaar enrollment centre.
  3. To apply for the Aadhaar card offline, you need to pay the centre a visit and carry the originals of the required documents. This includes your identity and address proof and your proof of birth.
  4. Fill out the enrollment form with the correct information at the enrollment centre.
  5. Once filled out, submit the form and the required supporting documents.
  6. The centre will take your photo along with your biometric information, i.e., iris and fingerprint scans.
  7. Following these steps, an acknowledgement receipt will be issued with a 14-digit number to help you track your Aadhaar application. This is the enrollment number.
  8. After verifying all the details on the enrollment form, the Aadhaar card is mailed to you.
  9. An Aadhaar card might take up to 3 months to reach you.

How to apply for Aadhaar card online

You can also apply for a new Aadhaar card online by following the steps below:

  1. Visit the official UIDAI website to schedule a meeting at your nearest Aadhaar enrollment centre.
  2. Once that is done, you can download the Aadhaar card application form online from the UIDAI website.
  3. Once you have downloaded the form and filled it out, you need to pay the centre a visit at the appointed time.
  4. This is because biometrics, such as iris and fingerprints, can only be taken and recorded at the centre.
