Latest update about senior citizen health insurance

On January 30, 2025, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) issued a directive capping premium hikes on senior citizen mediclaim policies. As per the new mandate, insurers cannot increase premiums by more than 10% annually without obtaining prior approval from the regulator. Additionally, any intent to discontinue a senior citizen health insurance policy must also receive IRDAI's approval beforehand.

Earlier, on September 12, 2024, the Union Cabinet made a landmark announcement to expand the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Under this decision, all senior citizens aged 70 and above are now eligible for free health insurance coverage of up to Rs. 5 lakh per family per year on a floater basis.
