The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a regulatory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. It ensures food safety and quality in India by setting standards, regulating manufacturing, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products to protect public health.
Renewing your FSSAI license is mandatory for all food business operators and must be completed before the license expires.
- For FSSAI Basic Registration, renewal should be done at least 30 days before the expiry date.
- For State or Central Food Licenses, renewal must be done at least 60 days before the expiry date.
If a food business operator fails to renew on time, a penalty of Rs. 100 per day is applied until the license expiry date. Additionally, the FSSAI may cancel the license automatically if renewal is not completed on time.
The validity of a food license ranges from 1 to 5 years, depending on the size of the food business.

Food Business Owners (FBOs) with an FSSAI Basic registration or licence must ensure they renew it on time. An expired licence can result in losing your existing licence number, which may affect your packaging and advertising.
An expired food licence is treated the same as having no licence at all. Running a food business with an expired licence can lead to penalties from FSSAI. This article also explains the possible consequences and fines.
FBOs should submit the renewal application at least 30 days before the licence expiry. Renewing on time ensures your business complies with FSSAI standards.
To run your food business legally and without interruptions, it is essential to renew your FSSAI licence before it expires.
Conclusion
Renewing your FSSAI licence online is essential for staying compliant and ensuring the smooth running of your food business. Timely renewal helps you avoid legal penalties and builds consumer trust.
An active FSSAI licence is also often required when applying for a business loan, as it shows regulatory compliance and credibility. Maintaining a valid licence can improve your chances of approval and assist in understanding your business loan eligibility, comparing business loan interest rates, and using a business loan EMI calculator to plan repayments effectively.
By following the simple online renewal process, you can secure your business’s future while continuing to provide safe, high-quality food products to your customers. You can also check your FSSAI application status to stay updated and ensure uninterrupted operations.
