How to Renew FSSAI License Online in India? Process, Fees, and Documents

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a regulatory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. It ensures food safety and quality in India by setting standards, regulating manufacturing, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products to protect public health.

Renewing your FSSAI license is mandatory for all food business operators and must be completed before the license expires.

• For FSSAI Basic Registration, renewal should be done at least 30 days before the expiry date.
• For State or Central Food Licenses, renewal must be done at least 60 days before the expiry date.

If a food business operator fails to renew on time, a penalty of Rs. 100 per day is applied until the license expiry date. Additionally, the FSSAI may cancel the license automatically if renewal is not completed on time.

The validity of a food license ranges from 1 to 5 years, depending on the size of the food business.

The renewal of an FSSAI license or FSSAI registration is fully online.

• Form A is used for FSSAI registration renewal, and Form B is used for FSSAI license renewal.
• All required documents must be uploaded in digital format.

If there have been any changes in the food business operator’s status, documents, general information, or business activities since the expiry of the previous license or registration, supporting proof of such changes must be submitted along with the renewal application.

Required documents include:

• Certificate or plan of the Food Safety Management System being followed (for central-licensed units, this must come from an accredited agency)
• Copy of the expired food license or registration certificate (to download FSSAI certificate, visit the official portal)
• List of employees with their medical fitness certificates
• Name and details of the technical staff responsible for operations

After successful renewal, you can download FSSAI certificate or registration proof from the portal for your records.

FSSAI license renewal is required for all three types of licenses: Basic FSSAI license, State FSSAI license, and Central FSSAI license. Renewal applications must be submitted before the expiry date. Your login ID and password remain valid during the renewal process.

Renewal of Basic FSSAI license

For food businesses under basic registration, use FSSAI License Renewal Form A.

• The renewal fee ranges from Rs. 100 to Rs. 500 per year, depending on the number of years you choose.

Renewal of State FSSAI license

For businesses under a State license, use FSSAI License Renewal Form B.

• Renewal fees depend on the type of food business and the duration of the license renewal (1 to 5 years).
• Government fees can be Rs. 2,000, Rs. 3,000, or Rs. 5,000 per year based on the business type.

Renewal of Central FSSAI license

For businesses under Central licensing (annual turnover above Rs. 20 crore, importers/exporters, operations in multiple states, or e-commerce), use FSSAI License Renewal Form C.

• The government’s average fee for renewal is Rs. 7,500 per year.

• Expiry and penalty: FSSAI licences should ideally be renewed 30–60 days before they expire. If the licence expires, food business operators (FBOs) get an extra 30 days to renew it, but a penalty will apply.
• Late renewal penalty: If you renew after the expiry, a penalty of Rs. 100 per day is charged. Make sure to calculate the penalty based on how many days have passed since expiry.
• Accessing the FSSAI portal: Go to the FSSAI online portal (https://foscos.fssai.gov.in) and log in with your account. If you don’t have an account, create one using your business details.
• Filling the renewal application: Click on ‘Renewal’ under the ‘Apply for Renewal’ section. Enter the expired licence number and other required details, and upload documents like your old licence and updated business information.
• Fee calculation and payment: The portal will calculate the renewal fee and any late penalty. Pay the total online using the available payment options.
• Submitting the renewal application: After payment, submit your application. Make sure all details are correct and documents are uploaded properly to avoid delays.
• Inspection and verification: Your application may be checked by FSSAI officials, including inspections, to ensure your business complies with food safety rules.
• Receiving the renewed licence: Once approved, you can download the renewed licence from the FSSAI portal.
• Keeping records: Safely keep your renewed licence and payment receipts for future reference and compliance checks.
• Ongoing compliance: To avoid delays in future, set reminders for timely renewal of your FSSAI licence to ensure smooth business operations.

Have you checked if your FSSAI licence or registration certificate is still valid? FSSAI does not issue licences or registrations for a lifetime. They are valid only for a limited period and must be renewed regularly.

Until recently, both FSSAI licences and registrations were issued for 1 to 5 years, depending on the applicant’s choice and the fee paid. However, according to an FSSAI order dated 11th January 2023, the rules for validity changed from 12th January 2023 onwards.
