An LCD screen works by controlling light rather than producing it directly. Unlike older display technologies, it does not generate its own light. Instead, it uses a backlight, usually made of LEDs, placed behind the screen.
At the core of the display are liquid crystals positioned between two layers of glass. These crystals do not emit light, but they can twist and align when an electric current passes through them. This alignment controls how much light can pass through each pixel.
Each pixel on an LCD screen is divided into three sub pixels: red, green, and blue. By adjusting the voltage applied to the liquid crystals, the screen precisely manages the amount of light passing through these coloured filters. The combination of varying light intensities from the red, green, and blue sub pixels creates millions of colours.
Polarising filters also play a key role. They ensure light moves in specific directions, allowing the liquid crystals to either block or transmit it. This controlled manipulation of light forms the sharp images and text you see on the display.
