Things To Know Before Investing In Us Stocks

The US stock market is one of the top choices for investors who wish to diversify their portfolios. It allows Indian investors to diversify their investments across geographies and access commendable company stock options with high-end technologies and global wealth-creating businesses.

In the sections below, we examine the importance of US stock market for Indian investors and what one must consider before investing in this market.

Key takeaways

  • The US stock market hosts some of the top companies and tech giants of the world. Hence, Indian investors can get global exposure by investing in the US market.
  • Indian investors can consider factors such as fund limits, taxation laws, currency exchange rates, and regulatory framework differences while investing in the US market.
  • Investors can improve their profit potential, balance out risks, and diversify their portfolios by investing in other markets.

Should you invest in the US stock market?

Trading_8

Most tech giants and global companies were founded and established in America. Major players such as Google and Apple can be taken as examples to explore the possibilities of investments and developments in the US market.

All economies face highs and lows occasionally, but the US stock market has always been robust and bounces back sooner or later in times of crisis. This is one of the reasons Indian investors consider investing in the US stock market—for its dependability and profit potential. Hence, considering your risk capacity and portfolio analysis, the scope here is massive. However, one should conduct thorough research and consider all factors listed below to make well-informed investments in the US stock market.

5 factors to consider before investing in the US stock market

It is always wise to know the market dynamics and their overall functioning before making any major investments in the US stock market. If you are still contemplating and have yet to make any trades, consider the below factors before making any moves in the US market as an Indian investor.

  • Foreign exchange impact
Fluctuations in exchange rates are a key aspect to consider for potential US market investors. This is because when one makes these investments, they are also investing in the US dollar. Depending on the value of the Indian rupee against the dollar, the investment portfolio can incur more profits or losses.
  • Fund Limitations
There are certain fund limitations to investing in the US stock market. Indian investors can only remit up to $2,50,000 per year under the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). Any amounts over this limit would require special permission from the RBI. Indian residents can also use this defined amount towards travel, education, and other overseas purchases during the financial year.
  • Taxation rules
Considering all tax implications on foreign investments is very important. The double tax avoidance agreement (DTAA) between India and the US prevents double taxation on the same income. Also, depending on short-term or long-term capital gains, the taxation rates and rules are different.
If investors hold the stocks purchased in the US stock market for 24 months or less, their profits are taxed as per their income slabs. However, as per old rules, long-term capital gains are taxed at 20% along with an indexation benefit on the expense, a surcharge, and a cess. The new budget has proposed a rate reduction to 12.5%, which will be beneficial for future US stock market Indian investors.
  • Investment charges
Considering all trades are made in US dollars, stock market investments involve certain conversion costs. When the account is set up, funds need to be transferred to a foreign broking account for all transactions. This is when a currency transfer fee is incurred. There can be other charges, including account maintenance fees or platform-specific transactional fees. Both of these are subject to the platform and can't be predefined.
  • The regulatory framework
One of the most well-regulated stock markets, the US stock market is efficient, transparent, and quite old. It hosts some of the biggest companies and market leaders in the world. A global presence, large scale of establishments, and major operational setups are some key characteristics of the corporations listed on the US stock exchange.

Bottom line

While building an investment portfolio, it might be a good idea to diversify your assets and balance out risks. This can be done by investing in different economies from all over the world. Thanks to digital technological advancements and manageable regulations, investing in major non-Indian markets like the US stock market has become easier.

As times change, it is essential to adjust your portfolio. Although the Indian stock market is strong, it is much smaller compared to the US market. This is why investing in US companies and stocks can give investors exposure to the global market and a chance to expand their wealth.
