- 1945: Foundation. The Mahindra Group was established on 2 October 1945 in Ludhiana, Punjab, by J.C. Mahindra, K.C. Mahindra, and Malik Ghulam Muhammad. Initially named Mahindra & Mohammed, the company began by trading steel, sourced through UK suppliers, to meet post-war industrial demand in India.
- 1947: Assembling Willys Jeeps. The company began assembling Willys Jeeps under licence in India in 1947, importing the first batch of vehicles from the United States. These vehicles played a significant role in improving transportation in rural and rugged areas of the country.
- 1948: Renamed Mahindra & Mahindra. Following the Partition of India in 1947, Malik Ghulam Muhammad emigrated to Pakistan, where he later served as the country's first finance minister and, from 1951, its third Governor-General. In 1948, the company was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra.
- 1956: Listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Mahindra & Mahindra gained a public listing on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
- 1960s: Expansion into tractors. The Mahindra Group entered tractor manufacturing in the 1960s, a segment that would later make it one of the world's largest tractor producers by volume.
- 1962: Entry into steel manufacturing. The group established Mahindra Ugine Steel Company, in partnership with France's Ugine Kuhlmann, marking its entry into steel manufacturing.
- 1986: Establishment of Tech Mahindra. The Mahindra Group founded Tech Mahindra in 1986, in partnership with British Telecom, entering the information technology and business process outsourcing sector.
- 1996: Entry into hospitality. The group launched Club Mahindra Holidays in 1996, entering the hospitality and vacation ownership sector.
- 2011: SsangYong Motor Company. Mahindra acquired a controlling stake in South Korea's SsangYong Motor Company in 2011, expanding its global automotive footprint. Mahindra later ceased funding the subsidiary, which entered receivership in December 2020; ownership formally transferred to a consortium led by the KG Group in November 2022.
- 2015: Peugeot Motocycles. Mahindra Two Wheelers Europe acquired a 51% stake in French scooter maker Peugeot Motocycles in January 2015, later increasing this to full ownership in October 2019. In 2022, Mahindra agreed to transfer majority ownership of Peugeot Motocycles to European investment firm Mutares.
- 2011–2019: Growth in SUVs. The group launched the XUV500 in 2011 and continued expanding its SUV line-up through the decade, including the Thar and XUV300.
