Lately, there has been a lot of clamour surrounding the Aadhaar card. The government has consistently extended the deadline to link your Aadhaar with phone numbers, LPG connections, bank accounts and other important utilities. Though there are speculations of privacy breaches, the decision is currently under examination by the supreme court. Irrespective of the final decision, you can easily link your Aadhaar with your PAN and mobile number in a few easy steps.

According to the Finance Act 2017, it is now mandatory to quote your Aadhaar number to file an income tax return. Linking of Aadhaar number with your PAN and your phone number has become compulsory, failure of which could cancel your PAN. To avoid future inconveniences, link your PAN with your Aadhaar and phone number.

Check if your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN card

Step 1: Visit the income tax e-filing online portal.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option under ‘Quick Links’ section.

Step 3: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.

Step 4: Click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’ to check if your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN or not.

Link your Aadhaar to PAN online

Step 1: Log in to the E-Filing portal: Visit the income tax filing website, and log in with your username and password.

Step 2: Change the profile settings: Once you have successfully logged in, go to the profile-setting tab and click on the 'link Aadhaar' option in the drop-down list.

Step 3: Link Aadhaar: Once the new window opens, it will display your details like name, gender, etc., as per the PAN. Verify it with your Aadhaar. Once it matches, you may get a captcha code to verify. Enter the captcha code and click on 'link Aadhaar'.

Ensure that date of birth and gender mentioned in both the PAN and Aadhaar cards are the same. Once UIDAI verifies the data, the linking gets confirmed.

Link your Aadhaar to PAN offline

Just visit PAN service centres such as NSDL PAN centre or UTIITSL PAN centre to get your Aadhaar linked with your PAN.

Link your Aadhaar to PAN via SMS

Just follow these simple steps to link your Aadhaar with PAN through an SMS:

1. Type an SMS in this format: UIDPAN<Space>12-digit Aadhaar number<Space>10-digit PAN

Example: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234A

2. Send this message to 567678 or 56161

Link your Aadhaar to your phone number

Linking Aadhaar with your phone number is also simple. Here’s how:

  • Visit your telecom operator with your Aadhaar number
  • Provide your phone number to the operator; you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number
  • Provide this OTP to the operator
  • The operator will take your fingerprint for biometric validation
  • Once complete, you will get an SMS informing you of the linkage

Who is not required to link Aadhaar with PAN

Certain individuals, such as non-resident Indians (NRIs), are not mandated or required to link Aadhaar with PAN as per Indian tax laws. Additionally, those individuals who are not eligible to obtain Aadhaar are exempt from this requirement.
