Digital Loan App: How to Check It Is Safe

Digital Loan App: How to Check It Is Safe

A digital loan app lets you check an offer, submit documents, sign and repay a loan on your phone. Since 8th May, 2025, such apps must follow the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) Digital Lending Directions.

Rs. 40,000 - Rs. 75 lakh

In summary

A safe digital loan app names its regulated lender and shows a Key Fact Statement before you sign. It pays money straight into your bank account and asks only for the data that know your customer (KYC) checks need. Apps that ask for fees upfront or access to your contacts are warning signs. You can apply for a Bajaj Finance Personal Loan through the Bajaj Finance app.

  • Check the lender's name before anything else.
  • Read the Key Fact Statement in full.
  • Refuse requests for contact or gallery access.
  • Shalini borrowed Rs. 1.2 lakh through the digital loan app.

Using a regulated lender's app? Check your loan offer with your phone number and a one-time password (OTP) → apply online → receive funds within 24 hours* of approval.

What is a digital loan app?

It is a mobile app through which a regulated lender, or a platform working for one, offers and manages loans. You check an offer, upload documents, sign the agreement and track repayments in one place. A digital loan app is a channel; the loan itself comes from the lender behind it, which sets the rate and terms.

What protections must every app follow?

The RBI (Digital Lending) Directions, 2025 set 5 protections that apply when you borrow through a digital loan app. The table explains each one.

ProtectionWhat it means for you
Key Fact Statement (KFS)Rate, fees, monthly instalment and total cost in a standard format before you sign
Direct disbursal and repaymentMoney moves only between you and the regulated lender
Cooling-off periodYou can exit the loan without penalty within the set period
Limits on data accessNo access to contacts or call logs, beyond one-time KYC with consent
Grievance redressalA complaint route linked to the RBI Complaint Management System

Last updated: 23rd October, 2026

Ask the app for its cooling-off period and grievance contact before you accept. Both should be simple to find in any digital loan app.

How do you tell a safe app from a risky one?

Ask 5 questions before you share any documents with an app. The table gives the answer a safe digital loan app should give.

CheckSafe answer
Who is the lender?A bank or a Reserve Bank of India (RBI)-registered NBFC named in the app
Is there a KFS?A full Key Fact Statement before you accept
What permissions does it ask for?Nothing beyond what KYC needs; no contacts or gallery
Where does the money come from?Directly from the lender into your bank account
Does it ask for fees upfront? No; fees are disclosed and deducted or charged as per the KFS

If a digital loan app fails any check, stop. Delete that digital loan app and report it through the RBI's complaint channels.

Worked example: Shalini in Guwahati

Shalini is 33 and works as a salaried tea export documentation officer in Guwahati, on a Rs. 57,000 monthly salary; her CIBIL score is 741. She read the Key Fact Statement in the Bajaj Finance app and borrowed Rs. 1.2 lakh to replace her home's wiring and fittings, at an illustrative 15.5% per annum. She checked the equated monthly instalment (EMI) for 1 and 2 years.

EMI = P × R × (1 + R)^N ÷ [(1 + R)^N − 1]. Here P = Rs. 1,20,000, R = 15.5 ÷ 1,200 and N = months.

TenureMonthly EMI (Rs.)Total interest (Rs.)EMI as share of salary (%)
12 months (1 year)10,85910,31219.1
24 months (2 years)5,84720,32710.3

Last updated: 23rd October, 2026

Doubling the tenure nearly halves the EMI, a fall of Rs. 5,012, while interest rises by Rs. 10,015. The processing fee would be at most Rs. 4,956. Shalini chose 24 months, as a 19.1% EMI share was too high for her budget. The digital loan app let her compare both before signing.

What can delay approval: a CIBIL score below 650 or existing EMIs that take up a large share of your income. Names or addresses that do not match across documents, and more than one loan application in the same month, can also slow it down.

Are digital loan apps safe to borrow through?

It can be, when the app belongs to or works for a regulated lender and follows the RBI (Digital Lending) Directions, 2025. Check that the lender is named, that a Key Fact Statement appears before you sign and that money comes straight from the lender. Avoid any digital loan app that asks for upfront fees or contact access.

It is a window after you take the loan during which you can exit without a penalty, under the RBI (Digital Lending) Directions, 2025. You repay the principal and the interest for the days you held the money. The length of the period is set by the lender and stated in your loan documents.

Under the RBI (Digital Lending) Directions, 2025, apps cannot access contacts, call logs or similar phone data, apart from a one-time access needed for KYC with your consent. You can also withdraw consent and ask for your data to be deleted. Deny any digital loan app permission it does not need.

Start with the lender's grievance officer, whose details must appear in the app and on the lender's website. If the issue is not resolved, you can escalate through the Reserve Bank of India's Complaint Management System. Report apps run by unregulated lenders to the cybercrime portal and the app store.
