Key Takeaways

  • Successful day trading requires a disciplined approach and well-thought-out strategies.
  • Panic and impulsive actions can lead to significant losses. Maintaining composure and making informed decisions is essential.
  • Traders should develop their analytical skills and strategies to make independent decisions, not relying on external tips.

Day trading is a popular share trading method in India. Even people who are new to the market think of trading as synonymous with day trading. However, an overwhelming majority of them tend to lose money and make losses in the financial market. The trading success rate is also quite low. Thus, an enquiry into why most people suffer from a low trading success rate is necessary and can be insightful for market enthusiasts.

Despite the popularity of intraday trading, more than two-thirds of the new traders do not continue trading past their first year, and over 90% leave the market in the first three years. They realise that becoming a seasoned trader is a challenging feat and requires vast amounts of patience. Intraday trading also has the potential to result in significant losses.

In this article, we will explore the reasons behind the low trading success rate in the financial market to help traders understand the potential mistakes to avoid and make smart decisions.

Lack of discipline

One of the most prominent causes of losses in trading is rooted in traders lacking discipline. Trading in the financial market requires significant strategising, and most traders jump into trades without a proper strategy. To make a trade successfully, there are three essentials. First, traders need to have the requisite knowledge of the market for day trading. This can be gained through courses, mentors, or guidebooks. In addition, it is vital to use stop losses to limit losses. Lastly, a high trading success rate cannot be maintained without discipline and focus.

Not adding a capital limit

As mentioned earlier, stop-loss limits are key to limiting losses in the market. A stop-loss limit and order can prevent unnecessary losses and capital bleeding.

For instance, one very effective strategy in day trading states that you should put a halt on trading in a day if you make a loss in the very first hour of trading. This pause should be dedicated to strategy reassessment to come back stronger the next day.

Trading against the trend

While in the long run, it might be beneficial to maintain a position against a market trend, in day trading, it may be extremely detrimental. The best idea is to often go with the flow to the extent of even automating your trades. This is because even a slight delay in trade execution could significantly affect your margins and the overall trading success rate.

Hitting the panic button

As there is limited time to execute trades and react to market trends, most traders end up panicking and reacting prematurely. It is especially common among beginners in the market. This significantly impacts trading success rates as panic directly impacts your potential profits. A high level of risk appetite and courage is necessary in day trading. It is also essential to track the market trends and remain calm in times of market volatility.

Trying to cover the loss

It is a common phenomenon in day trading that investors would often face a loss and then try to even out their position hastily. This is not the right tactic if you want to maintain a high trading success rate. A loss means that your bet was wrong, and trying to overcompensate for this makes you more vulnerable to compromised decisions.

Remember, losses are a part and parcel of the game. They should be viewed as an opportunity to acknowledge, process, and assess the mistake.

Relying on external tips

In day trading, because of the accelerated speed of trades, new traders often have a tough time finding reliable ways to choose the right stocks. In such situations, traders may end up relying heavily on external tips. However, it is a mistake that you must always avoid.

Some reliable ways to gain market insights include tips from your trustworthy stockbroker, analysing charts to understand trends, and leveraging technical and market analysis tools. Avoid the crowd sentiment and work towards developing skills to make decisions on your own.

Not taking note

It is also recommended that day traders keep a note of all their trades, including the details, profits and losses, and strategy used. This allows you to readily review and assess your decisions and continuously improve. Even though it may seem unnecessary, noting down your trades will give you an edge over others in the market and help you establish a robust self-feedback loop.

Conclusion

The low trading success rate among Indian day traders can be attributed to several key factors, primarily revolving around a lack of discipline, insufficient strategising, and panicked reactions to market fluctuations. Successful trading requires a comprehensive understanding of market dynamics, effective risk management, and a disciplined approach. By recognising and avoiding common pitfalls, you can enhance your trading success rate and chances of achieving sustained profitability in the financial market.

FAQs

What is the percentage of successful traders?

At the end of a trading day, approximately 1%-20% of total market traders are able to earn profits. This is a low success rate and forms part of the reason why enthusiasts remain wary of entering the market.

What is the success rate of day trading?

It is tough to state a definite number. However, the success rate in day trading broadly remains in the range of 10%-15%. This is due to high risk levels, the need for skilled trade execution, experience, and the level of competition in this segment.
