What changed the Nifty 50 expiry day?

What is NSE and how does it operate?

What is NSE and how does it operate?

The Nifty expiry schedule has changed several times since 2025.

In March 2025, NSE proposed moving the expiry day for Nifty and several other derivative contracts from Thursday to Monday. However, before the change took effect, the proposal was deferred and never implemented.

Later, following a broader SEBI-led restructuring of India's derivatives market, NSE revised the expiry framework and moved Nifty derivative expiries to Tuesday. The revised schedule became effective in September 2025 and remains in force today.

At the same time, BSE shifted Sensex derivative expiries to Thursday, creating separate weekly expiry days across the two exchanges.

Why did the expiry schedule change?

The revised expiry schedule is part of a broader restructuring of India's derivatives market. Previously, several major index derivatives expired on Thursday, concentrating trading activity on a single day. This often resulted in higher volatility, larger trading volumes, and greater operational pressure during expiry.

To spread trading activity more evenly, SEBI directed stock exchanges to review their expiry schedules. Following this review:

  • NSE moved Nifty derivative expiries to Tuesday.
  • BSE moved Sensex derivative expiries to Thursday.

The revised framework aims to:

  • Reduce concentration risk.
  • Lower expiry-day volatility.
  • Improve market efficiency by distributing settlement activity across different days.

What does the new expiry schedule mean for traders?

The revised schedule changes how traders plan their futures and options strategies.

Weekly trading now revolves around Tuesday

Traders in Nifty weekly options should now align their trading, hedging, and expiry-day strategies with Tuesday rather than the earlier Thursday cycle.

Monthly rollovers happen on the last Tuesday

Monthly contracts for Nifty, Bank Nifty, FINNIFTY, MIDCPNIFTY, NIFTYNXT50, and eligible stock F&O contracts now expire on the last Tuesday of the month. Traders may need to adjust rollover and hedging plans accordingly.

Exchange-specific expiry days matter

NSE and BSE now follow different weekly expiry schedules.

What happens if the expiry day falls on a trading holiday?

If the scheduled expiry day is a trading holiday, the expiry is generally advanced to the previous trading day.

For example:

  • If Tuesday is a trading holiday for NSE, Nifty derivative contracts usually expire on Monday.
  • If Thursday is a trading holiday for BSE, Sensex derivative contracts generally expire on Wednesday.

Always refer to the latest exchange holiday calendar and official notifications for any holiday-related changes to expiry dates.

Conclusion

Nifty derivatives currently expire on Tuesday, while Sensex derivatives expire on Thursday. Although NSE proposed shifting Nifty expiries to Monday in 2025, that proposal was never implemented. Instead, a later SEBI-led restructuring introduced the current Tuesday expiry framework.
