National Constitution Day, or Samvidhan Divas, is observed annually on 26 November to honour the adoption of the Constitution of India. It is a day of national reflection that celebrates the legal foundation of the country and the vision of those who framed it. More than just a ceremonial observance, it encourages citizens to revisit the principles of justice, equality, and liberty that are enshrined in the Constitution. The day fosters constitutional awareness and reinforces the values that sustain India’s democratic identity.
History of National Constitution Day
The Constitution of India was formally adopted on 26 November 1949, after nearly three years of deliberations by the Constituent Assembly. It came into force two months later on 26 January 1950, now celebrated as Republic Day. In 2015, the Government of India officially declared 26 November as Constitution Day to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution. Before this declaration, the day was informally observed as National Law Day. The change was aimed at giving the Constitution and its creators greater public recognition and at encouraging widespread legal literacy.
