You can clean an RO membrane at home by soaking it in a mild citric acid solution for at least 1 hour, then rinsing and reinstalling it. This removes calcium and magnesium scale deposits that clog the membrane and reduce water flow and purification quality.
- Remove the membrane from its housing using a membrane housing wrench and clean pliers
- Soak in a citric acid solution for at least 1 hour to dissolve mineral scale deposits
- Rinse with clean water, reinstall, and run the purifier for 10 minutes before drinking the output water
- Clean the membrane every 6–12 months — sooner if your water has high TDS or if the flow rate drops
- Replace the sediment and carbon pre-filters every 6 months to prevent large debris from reaching the membrane
- RO water purifiers in India start at around Rs. 7,000 for basic models
