What is a payment receipt?
A payment receipt is a document that confirms a payment has been successfully completed for a product or service. It serves as proof of payment and can be used for expense tracking, reimbursement claims, dispute resolution, and financial record-keeping. A payment receipt typically includes transaction details such as the payment amount, transaction date, payment method, and reference number. Keeping a copy of your receipt helps you verify completed transactions whenever required.
What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
A payment receipt confirms that a payment has already been made, while an invoice is a request issued before payment to collect the amount due.
| Parameter | Payment Receipt | Invoice |
|---|---|---|
| When issued | After payment is made | Before payment is made |
| Purpose | Proof that payment has been completed | Request for payment |
| Key detail shown | Amount paid and payment date | Amount due and due date |
Receipts and invoices serve different purposes but are often used together as part of a complete transaction record.
