What is ITR-V?

Taxes on stocks explained

Taxes on stocks explained

ITR-V stands for Income Tax Return–Verification. It is a one-page acknowledgement generated after you submit your income tax return without completing verification immediately.

It includes important details such as:

  • Your name
  • PAN
  • Assessment year
  • Date of filing
  • Acknowledgement number
  • Verification status

Submitting the return alone does not complete the filing process. You must also verify it electronically or send a signed physical copy of the ITR-V to the Centralised Processing Centre, or CPC.

The return should normally be verified within 30 days of filing. When verification happens within this period, the original upload date is treated as the return filing date. Delayed verification may change the filing date and lead to consequences applicable to late filing.

You can download the ITR-V from the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.

What is the ITR PDF password and its format?

The ITR-V acknowledgement PDF is password-protected because it contains personal and tax-related information.

The password usually follows this format:

PAN in lowercase + date of birth in DDMMYYYY format

Do not add spaces, slashes or hyphens.

For example:

  • PAN: ABCDE1234F
  • Date of birth: 10 January 1992
  • ITR PDF password: abcde1234f10011992

For a company or another non-individual taxpayer, the date of incorporation may be used instead of the date of birth.

How do you open the ITR-V acknowledgement PDF?

Opening the ITR-V PDF is easy when you use the correct password format. Follow these steps to download and open the file.

Step 1: Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal

Visit the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and select Login. Enter your user ID, complete the security checks and sign in using your password.
Your PAN is generally used as the user ID. If you have forgotten your password, use the password-reset option available on the portal.

Step 2: Go to your filed returns

After logging in, select e-File from the main menu.
Then go to Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns. This page shows your filed returns for different assessment years, along with their verification and processing status.
Select the assessment year for which you need the ITR-V.

Step 3: Download the ITR-V acknowledgement

Find the relevant return and select the available Download Form or Acknowledgement option.
Save the downloaded PDF in an easy-to-find folder. The ITR-V normally includes details such as your PAN, name, filing date, assessment year and verification status.

Step 4: Open the password-protected PDF

Open the downloaded ITR-V using a trusted PDF reader. A password box will appear.
Enter your PAN in lowercase followed immediately by your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. Do not use spaces, slashes or other special characters.
For example:

  • PAN: ABCDE1234F
  • Date of birth: 10 January 1992
  • Password: abcde1234f10011992

Step 5: Check the details in the ITR-V

If the password is correct, the PDF will open. Check whether the PAN, assessment year, filing date and verification status match the return you submitted.
If the file does not open, make sure the PAN is in lowercase and the date is entered correctly. Non-individual taxpayers may need to use the date of incorporation instead of the date of birth.
Keep the acknowledgement for your records and complete verification within 30 days if it is still pending.

How can you e-verify your income tax return?

E-verification confirms that the income tax return was filed by you. It allows you to complete the verification online without sending a physical copy of the ITR-V.

You should verify your return within 30 days of filing. After successful verification, the status of your return changes to verified, and you may receive confirmation by email and SMS.

The Income Tax Department provides different e-verification methods, including Aadhaar OTP, Net Banking, a bank account-based EVC, a Demat account-based EVC and a Digital Signature Certificate. Follow the instructions shown on the e-Filing portal for the method you choose.

Keep a copy of the acknowledgement and verification confirmation for your records.

Online e-verification methods

You can e-verify your ITR through any of the available online methods:

  • Aadhaar OTP: An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar.
  • Net Banking: Log in through your bank’s Net Banking portal and access the income tax e-Filing service.
  • Bank account-based EVC: Generate an Electronic Verification Code through a bank account that is pre-validated on the e-Filing portal.
  • Demat account-based EVC: Generate an EVC through a Demat account that is linked and validated on the portal.
  • Digital Signature Certificate: Use a valid DSC where this verification method is required or available.

Enter the OTP or EVC within the allowed time to complete the verification. Once accepted, you do not need to send a physical ITR-V.

Offline physical submission method

If you cannot e-verify your return, you can send a signed physical copy of the ITR-V to the Centralised Processing Centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

ITR PDF Password

What is the password to open the ITR PDF file?

The standard password for opening your ITR PDF is your PAN in lowercase, followed by your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format, without spaces. For example, if your PAN is ABCDE1234F and your date of birth is 15 August 1990, enter abcde1234f15081990. Non-individual taxpayers may need to use their date of incorporation.

Why is my ITR PDF not opening?

Your ITR PDF may not open if you enter the PAN in uppercase, use the wrong date format, add spaces or special characters, or enter a date of birth that does not match the PAN records. Check that the password contains your PAN in lowercase followed immediately by the date in DDMMYYYY format. You can also try opening the file with an updated PDF reader.

Is the ITR password the same every year?

The password format generally remains the same each year because it is based on your PAN and date of birth. Therefore, your ITR PDF password will usually remain unchanged unless your PAN details or recorded date of birth are corrected. However, the password protects each downloaded PDF separately, so you must still enter it whenever you open a protected ITR document.
