To ensure road safety and prevent vehicle theft, the government of India has introduced the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) system. In India, all vehicles sold before 1st April 2019 must mandatorily be equipped with a HSRP number plate. Failure to adhere to this will attract fines ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000. In this article, we will discuss what an HSRP is, who needs it, how to apply for it, its benefits, and the rules and regulations associated with it.

What is an HSRP number plate?

An HSRP is a high-security registration plate that complies with the specifications set by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. It has a unique registration number and is designed to be tamper-proof, theft-resistant, and durable. It consists of a hot-stamped alpha-numeric code and has a colour-coded strip that indicates the fuel type and emission norms of the vehicle.

The HSRP number plate is made up of several parts, including the registration number of the vehicle, a hologram sticker, and a unique identification number. The registration number is typically a combination of letters and numbers that is assigned to the vehicle by the government. A chromium-based hologram of the size 20 mm x 20 mm shall be applied by hot stamping on the top left-hand corner of the plate in both front and rear plates to protect against counterfeiting, a.

The hologram shall contain CHAKRA in blue colour as specified in the Annexure appended to this Order. The hologram sticker adds an additional layer of security to the plate, making it difficult for criminals to create a fake plate. The unique identification number is used to track the plate and ensure that it is properly registered and authorised for use on the vehicle.

Who needs HSRP?

HSRP is a mandatory requirement for all vehicles, both new and existing, across various states in India. It serves as a crucial measure to ensure the authenticity and traceability of vehicles on the road.

HSRP licence plates for new and old cars

As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) directive, the adoption of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) is mandatory for all vehicles, irrespective of their manufacturing date, starting from 2022. While vehicles manufactured post-April 2019 come equipped with HSRP elements, older vehicles, purchased before this date, need to be retrofitted with HSRP number plates.

To obtain HSRP for older vehicles, you can visit your nearest RTO (Regional Transport Office) or book online through Book my HSRP website.

This comprehensive initiative aims to standardise vehicle registration and enhance security features to deter theft and unauthorised use. Retrofitting existing vehicles with HSRP ensures compliance with regulatory standards and promotes uniformity across the nation's vehicle fleet, contributing to improved road safety and efficient vehicle management systems.
