Traffic rule violations are one of the foremost reasons for road accidents in India. The Indian government has introduced several measures to curb road accidents, including implementing the new Motor Vehicles Act 2019. Under the amended Act, heavy fines and stricter monitoring measures have been implemented to punish traffic violators.

The government has introduced sophisticated technology and a digital e-challan system to ensure the efficient detection of violations and better adherence to traffic laws. The introduction of this digitised system allows bike owners to check their two-wheeler challans online and pay the outstanding fine in just a few clicks.

What is e-challan?

An e-challan is an electronic version of the traditional paper-based challans issued for traffic violations in India. This digital document specifies the violation made by the offender, along with the fine that needs to be paid. Different states have introduced CCTV cameras to continuously monitor and record traffic activity.

These CCTV cameras capture violations and transmit the same to the Traffic Control Room. Traffic police then contact the RTO to retrieve the violator's details with the plate number. After that, this automated e-challan system notifies the violator in real-time via SMS or email.

The centralised e-challan system and database were introduced to infuse transparency into the system, preventing citizens from paying bribes to avoid a formal challan. The digitised e-challan ecosystem allows you to check your bike challan status and make hassle-free online payments. You need to pay e-challans within 60 days of issuance. If you fail to do so, you may face legal repercussions.
