In Summary
Prepaying a loan reduces what you owe, but it does not decide your next loan. Lenders look at your whole profile, so prepayment is one factor, not a shortcut.
- Prepayment is not a score booster. A part-prepayment lowers your balance while the account stays active, and a full prepayment leads to a "Closed" status once your lender reports it, but your score still depends on your whole repayment history
- Lenders assess the full picture. Repayment history, credit report, income and existing obligations count for more than whether you paid early
- Check the charges before you pay. Some loans and variants carry prepayment or foreclosure charges, so confirm the amount shown in My Account and compare it with the interest you would save
- Know which payment you are making. Advance EMI, part-prepayment and foreclosure are different, and only the last two reduce or clear your principal
Before prepaying, check your loan terms and any charges in My Account, choose the right payment option, and check your updated statement afterwards.
What is prepayment on a loan?
Prepayment is paying an additional amount towards a loan before the scheduled repayment period ends. A borrower may make a part-prepayment by paying an extra amount towards the outstanding balance, or repay the entire loan early through foreclosure, depending on the applicable loan terms. A prepayment can reduce the outstanding principal and may affect the remaining repayment schedule, depending on how the payment is adjusted in the loan account.
The impact depends on the loan agreement, repayment arrangement and applicable conditions. Before prepaying, review your loan details and understand the
applicable terms, so you can see how the payment may affect your current obligations, remaining tenure and overall financial planning.
How does prepayment affect future loan eligibility?
Prepayment can influence certain aspects of your loan history, but it does not automatically decide future loan eligibility. Lenders assess each new application separately, based on their criteria and your overall financial profile.
Prepayment may help you:
- Reduce your outstanding balance: An early repayment can lower the remaining principal on your existing loan
- Maintain repayment discipline: Completing repayments as agreed may contribute to a positive repayment history
- Manage existing obligations: Reducing current liabilities may help you review your overall financial position
However, prepayment does not guarantee approval or better terms on a future loan. Lenders look at your whole profile, and prepayment is only one part of it. To keep your profile healthy, make timely repayments, review your credit information regularly, track your outstanding balances, and keep loan documents and payment details safely.
What factors affect future loan eligibility after prepayment?
Future loan eligibility is determined by multiple factors rather than prepayment alone. Lenders review relevant information to assess repayment capacity and creditworthiness when evaluating a new loan application.
| Factor | How it may affect loan assessment |
|---|---|
| Repayment history | Shows how previous loan obligations were managed |
| Credit profile | Provides information about borrowing and repayment behaviour |
| Existing obligations | Helps assess current repayment commitments |
| Income details | Helps evaluate repayment capacity |
| Loan application details | Supports assessment of the new borrowing requirement |
Maintaining accurate financial records and reviewing your repayment information can help you stay informed about your borrowing position.
Does prepayment improve your credit score?
Prepayment does not automatically improve your credit score. Credit records are influenced by repayment history, credit utilisation, account information and other reporting factors. What prepayment does change is how the account appears:
- Part-prepayment: The account stays active, with a lower outstanding balance
- Full prepayment (foreclosure): Once completed, the loan is reported to credit bureaus as "Closed" with zero outstanding, subject to the lender's reporting cycle, and this is not a default
Closing or prepaying a loan is not a guaranteed way to raise your score. Reviewing your credit report regularly and repaying on time remain what matter most.
What charges can apply when you prepay a loan?
Prepayment or foreclosure charges depend on your loan type and variant, so check the amount shown before you pay. Some loans carry a charge on the amount prepaid, while others do not. For example, Flexi loan variants generally carry no part-prepayment charge, while some Term Loans may.
The applicable charge is shown when you enter the amount in My Account, and it is set out in your loan agreement and the applicable fees and charges. Compare the charge with the interest you would save on the reduced principal before you decide, and do not rely on a figure from a general source.
How can you make a prepayment through Bajaj Finance?
You can make a part-prepayment or foreclose your loan through My Account or the Bajaj Finance App.
- Sign in to My Account or the Bajaj Finance App using your registered mobile number and OTP, and verify your details where asked
- Go to Service and select your loan under Your Relations
- Select Make Loan Payments
- Choose Part-prepayment, or Full Payment/Foreclosure to close the loan
- Enter the amount and review the applicable charges before you confirm
- Select a payment method, complete the payment and save the confirmation
An advance EMI is different. It covers an upcoming instalment and does not reduce your principal, so choose Part-prepayment if your aim is to lower your balance. The options displayed can vary by loan type, and some loan types may need a branch visit for foreclosure.
After paying, check your updated loan statement to confirm the new outstanding balance, and check it again after your next EMI date to confirm your EMI and tenure look as you expect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Prepayment & Future Loans
Overdue & Prepayment Sequence
Does prepayment close a loan account automatically?
A part-prepayment reduces your outstanding balance but does not close the loan, and your EMIs continue unless your lender confirms otherwise. Closure happens only when the entire outstanding amount, including any dues and charges, is paid and the lender completes its closure process. Check your loan status afterwards.
How does prepayment affect existing loan obligations?
A prepayment reduces the outstanding balance of your loan, subject to the applicable terms. Depending on your loan, it may lower your EMI, shorten your tenure or both. Do not stop paying EMIs unless your lender confirms a revised schedule in writing. Check your updated schedule afterwards.
What should you check before making a prepayment?
Before prepaying, check your outstanding balance, the applicable charges, any conditions on additional payments and your repayment schedule. Compare the charge with the interest you would save, and make sure the payment will not leave you short of funds for essential expenses or your upcoming EMIs.
Does prepayment reduce the total interest payable on a loan?
Prepayment may reduce the interest you pay over the remaining period, because interest is calculated on a lower outstanding principal. The actual saving depends on your loan terms, when you prepay and how the payment is adjusted. Charges may apply, so compare them with the interest saved before you decide.
How can you maintain a good credit profile after prepayment?
Keep making timely repayments on your other loans, manage your existing obligations responsibly and review your credit report regularly. Prepayment alone does not raise your score or decide future eligibility, but a clean repayment record and a Closed status on a fully repaid loan support a healthy credit history.
What records should you keep after making a prepayment?
Keep the payment confirmation, your updated loan statement and any closure documents if you paid in full. These records show how the payment was applied and help you resolve any query about your balance, EMI or tenure. Store them safely until the loan is closed.
