How to port your mobile number: Step-by-step process

To port your mobile number, send an SMS in the format PORT <your 10-digit number> to 1900 from your current SIM. You will receive an 8-digit Unique Porting Code (UPC). Submit it with valid ID and address proof to your new operator to complete the switch.

  1. Send an SMS from your current number in the format PORT <mobile number> to 1900.
  2. Receive your Unique Porting Code (UPC) on the same number.
  3. Visit the new operator’s store or website and submit your UPC with ID and address proof.
  4. Complete the KYC process and choose a suitable plan.
  5. Your request is processed as per applicable timelines.
  6. Insert the new SIM and follow activation instructions once approved.

Porting within the same telecom circle takes up to 3 working days. Between telecom circles, it may take up to 5 working days. In Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and North East regions, the process can take up to 15 working days.

Eligibility criteria for mobile number portability

You can apply for mobile number portability (MNP) if the following conditions are met:

  • Your number has been active on the current network for at least 90 days.
  • For postpaid connections, all outstanding dues for the issued bill are cleared.
  • There is no ongoing request to change ownership of the number.
  • There are no contractual obligations or legal restrictions on the number.
  • A UPC is not issued within 7 days of a SIM swap or replacement request.
