The Pragati Scholarship Scheme for girls is a Government of India initiative aimed at advancing girls' participation in technical education. The scholarship focuses on encouraging female students to pursue technical education by eliminating the financial burdens associated with technical courses. The Pragati Scholarship Scheme was launched in 2014 by the MHRD and implemented by the AICTE (All Indian Council for Technical Education). The scholarship offers financial support and assistance of up to Rs. 50,000 per year to eligible female students hailing from economically weaker sections of society. The Pragati Scholarship scheme for girls offers financial resources to female students hailing from economically weaker sections to lower this financial burden.

Features of Pragati Scholarship Scheme

The features of the Pragati Scholarship Scheme for girls are as listed below:

  • Number of scholarships: Under the Pragati Scholarship scheme for girls, the AICTE can issue 4000 scholarships per annum.
  • Qualifying level: The female student applying for the scholarship must be enrolled during the present academic year. Admission must be made on merit through the centralised admission process or a common entrance test of the Centre/State Government.
  • Eligibility: To qualify for the Pragati Scholarship for Girls scheme, the total annual family income of the girl student pursuing technical education must be less than Rs. 8 Lakhs per annum. If the student is married, the higher income between the parents and in-laws is taken into account. The Pragati Scholarship for Girls benefits can be extended to a maximum of two girl children from the same family.
  • Scholarship amount: The Pragati Scholarship for Girls aims to simplify the technical education process for the girl child by reducing the expenses associated with it. To this end, the scholarship pays a tuition fee equivalent to Rs. 30,000 or actuals, whichever is lower. Additionally, the girl child is entitled to Rs. 2,000 per month for 10 months as incidentals every year.
  • Coverage period: The Pragati Scholarship Scheme for girls pays Rs. 50,000 per annum for a maximum of 4 years.
  • Reimbursement: The scholarship holder can claim a tuition fee waiver or Rs. 30,000 reimbursement for the cost of purchasing books, equipment, software, laptops, desktops, or a vehicle. Reimbursement can also be claimed for fees paid for competitive examination application forms and exam fees.
  • Reservation quotas: According to the guidelines of the Pragati Scholarship for girls, 15% of the scholarships are reserved for SC candidates, 7.5% for ST candidates, and 27% for OBC candidates.

Application process

If you meet the eligibility criteria for the Pragati Scholarship Scheme, you can apply for the scholarship online. To do so, you have to visit the National Scholarship Portal. The Pragati Scholarship application process generally starts in July and ends in September. The selection list is based on the income profile and academic performance of the applicants.

Documents required

To apply for the Pragati scholarship for girls, you need to submit the following documents:

  • Previous marksheets: Copies of your class 10/12/equivalent examination marksheet (as applicable).
  • Income proof: Copies of your Annual Family Income Certificate for the current financial year attested by the Tahsildar or higher officer to prove that your family’s income does not exceed Rs. 8 lakh.
  • Identity proof: A copy of your Aadhaar Card is mandatory as photo-identity proof.
  • Admission proof: You also need to submit proof of admission into a technical institution during your current academic year. Admission proof documents include copies of the admission letter for the Diploma/Degree course, a letter from the Director/Head of the Institute/Principal, and copies of the tuition fee receipt.
  • Bank documents: You must submit a copy of your bank passbook with your name, account number, IFSC code, and photograph clearly visible. The passbook should have the manager’s signature and the bank’s rubber stamp affixed.
  • Other documents: If you are applying under the reservation policy, you must submit duly attested copies of your SC/ST/OBC certificate.
