After months of researching the right thumper to put my money on, I went with the Harley. It feels like the best thumper engine in the country, suited to city use and touring alike. The exhaust’s rumble is lovely and keeps you engaged the whole time. Open the throttle and you get a little vibration, exactly the kind that makes you feel alive. It has loads of character and feels substantial on the move. If your riding is only in the city, you can also look at the 350 cc options from Royal Enfield and Triumph. For touring, you really want something above 400 cc, which puts this Harley against Royal Enfield’s parallel twin 650. I rode the REs too, but the twin didn’t offer this much character and felt a bit too refined. RE’s suspension is a letdown in a country like ours, though their dealership experience is definitely better. Focus on the motorcycle you will live with every day and you may choose better. That’s why I bought the Harley, and I ended up saving a lakh and a half in the process. Get it, it’s therapy!

The Harley X440 is a whole mood. If you are around 30, live in a busy Indian city, and want something that looks badass without wrecking your back in rush hour, this fits perfectly. It serves up that retro, big-bike presence without feeling like a cumbersome tank. On tarmac it really shines: strong low-end punch lets you thread through chaos in third gear without any sputter. It stays nimble, shrugs off potholes, and is ready for a highway escape on weekends. You get the classic, deep Harley note that grabs attention at signals, yet it remains as dependable and easy to manage as a daily commuter. A great step up if you want premium bragging rights minus the headache of a huge, unwieldy motorcycle.
If you want to keep talking:
- Need the on-road price and mileage in India?
- Should we compare it with the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 or Triumph Speed 400?
- Want ideas for the best accessories for weekend touring?

After about 6 months with the Harley-Davidson X440, it comes across as powerful, comfortable, and stylish for daily rides as well as highway touring. My mailage has gone up to 42 km/L, which makes it feel like a must-buy. The 440 cc engine offers strong low-end torque, keeping city runs smooth, and cruising around 80 to 100 kmph on the highway is easygoing. Many owners appreciate the deep exhaust note, relaxed riding posture, and premium road presence.
Long distances are comfortable, and the rider’s seat ergonomics work well. Typically, mileage hovers between 27 and 33 kmpl depending on traffic and riding style. With Hero MotoCorp support, service costs stay manageable.
There are a few downsides noticed over time: in traffic it can feel a little heavy for newcomers. Some riders have faced hard gear shifts, engine heat in summer jams, a stiff front end, and rear brakes that feel average. Service experiences vary by dealer, with a few reporting delays and weak support.
Overall, the X440 suits riders who want a premium cruiser feel with head-turning presence, a relaxed posture, and enjoyable torque. It is not the fastest in the segment, but it delivers a distinctive Harley character at a practical price for Indian roads.
