Rediscover 'The Lost City of Inca' under Rs.5 lakh

  • Highlights

  • A trip to Macchu Pichu is the perfect way to experience an era that’s gone by

  • You can now travel this mystical, ancient city in just Rs.5 lakh with our step-by-step of the expenses involved

Machu Picchu, The Lost City of Inca, is made entirely of stones. Packed with architectural splendour, the city serves as a window to what life was in the bygone era. You too can experience a fragment of history at Machu Picchu within Rs.5 lakh by following these tips.

Route map

Unfortunately, there is no direct flight to Machu Picchu from India. You have to make your way through Lima, as it is a hub for almost all major flights and bus services. If you plan in advance, you can book two-way airfare to Lima with British Airways for just over Rs.1.5 lakh, for two adult travellers. To keep costs low, pick flights with stopovers instead of direct ones.

Make the journey from Lima to Cusco in a local airline like LC Peru. This will cost you approximately Rs.7,500 per person for a one-way trip. Once in Cusco, book a seat on a PeruRail train and ride to Machu Picchu by paying Rs.4,515 for a one-way ticket. Remember that the prices alter depending on the train and the time of the day, so choose accordingly!

On your way

The long journey to Machu Picchu is well worth the time and money spent. The train stops at Aguas Calientes, from where you have to buy an entry ticket to the mountain city by paying Rs.4,257–Rs.5,224 approximately. You can pre-book this ticket online, or at ticketing offices at various stations in Peru. Again, the prices vary depending on your country of origin and the time of your visit.
Before you set out to spend a day exploring the ancient ruins, you can book a stay at Aguas Calientes, a small town that offers safe bed and breakfasts to tourists. Take advantage of your halt, spend a day in and around the city. Machu Picchu is accessible from here by a bus or train ride, which takes around 20 minutes. A return ticket for the bus will cost around Rs.1,547 per person.

Personal Loan for Travel

Plan your stay

Opt for affordable stays along the riverbanks of the Urubamba River. Stay in hotels like Gringo Bill’s or La Cabana in Aguas Calientes for a great view, cosy room and warm sumptuous breakfast spread. You can enjoy all this for around Rs.5,900 per night. But if you want to splurge, stay at Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel. Stay for a night costs around Rs.23,000 here. Search for basic homestays on Airbnb at a lower price. Plan smart. When you prioritise everything that you want to do, you’ll be able to budget for the trip and plan stops logically.

Once you reach Machu Picchu, be sure to visit these spots:

1) Explore the well-preserved relics of the lost civilisation at the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary. The sanctuary is open to visitors until 4 pm and the entry ticket is around Rs.2500.
2) Take a hike to watch the sunrise at Sun Gate, also known as Inti Punku. Spot the gate as you walk the steps to the valley.
3) Get a bird’s eye view of the city from the Watchman’s Hut. It is hard to miss this windowed hut, perched at the edge of the cliff once you enter the city.
4) Check the time on the sacred sundial housed in the Temple of the Sun. This sundial forms the basis of the Incan civilisation, making it a must-visit spot.
5) Connect with the Incan ways of life and embark on a spiritual journey at the Sacred Valley. Here, visit Tipon, an erstwhile agricultural centre and Pisaq ruins.

Plan a wonderful holiday to Machu Picchu under Rs.5 lakh and manage your finances easily with a personal loan for travel, which you can pay off in convenient EMIs.
