Imagine a pitch-black sky being lit up by green flashes and lemon and rose-coloured swirls, with stars dotted all around. It sounds incredible, and it truly is. Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, is a spectacle unlike any other.
Legend has it that Jussi, the founder of the renowned Artic Resort, was once travelling in Finland on a fishing trip when he ran out of fuel and got stuck in Kakslauttanen. What started as a little cottage, went on to become a café and is now Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, one of the most exotic resorts in the world, replete with igloos! The good news is that you can plan this trip without exceeding Rs.5 lakh.


Location:

This stunning property is located in the north of Finland. Ten kilometres away from Saariselkä, and 3 hours away from the heart of Rovaniemi, the official home of Santa Claus, this hotel is worth the effort you that have to take to get there. While the luxury resort has log cabins, for an unobstructed view of the Northern Lights, staying in an igloo is a good idea.

Getting there:

1)Booking your flights well in advance is the best way to keep costs low. Track prices of tickets and book one as soon as you find a good deal.

2) A round trip from Mumbai to Ivola, Finland, will cost you Rs.64,000 per person. Once you reach Ivola, you can either take a bus to Saariselkä, or book a cab that will drop you off straight at the hotel.

3) If you choose to fly into Helsinki, the capital (and largest city) of Finland, it will cost you around Rs.42,000. Then you can take a flight or an overnight train to Ivola which can cost between Rs.7,000 to Rs.20,000. If you’re pressed for time, a flight is a better option. You will reach Ivola in 90 minutes and from there, the resort is a one-hour drive. You can also tie-up with the resort for an airport pick-up.

4) If you travel from Rovaniemi, then taking the bus is the best option. The 3-hour journey is comfortable and you can make a booking online for around Rs.6,000. The bus is always on time and will drop you right at the entrance of the resort.

Accommodation:

The resort is divided into two villages – east and west. The resort has glass igloos as well traditional wooden cottages. It also has the world’s largest smoke sauna. Free Wi-Fi and parking are also offered to all guests.

The thermal igloo features a bedroom with a glass roof and luxury beds. Some igloos include a bathroom with a sauna, while others have shared shower facilities. Pick one that suits your budget.

The chalets, on the other hand, feature cooking facilities, a seating area and a fireplace. A private sauna is also included. A standard chalet for will cost you around Rs.32,500 per night.

Activities:

The resort offers several activities such as a Northern Lights safari, husky rides, and reindeer safaris, which start at Rs.14,000 per person. Apart from this, you can take a long walk in the snow-laden landscape, with Nordic walking sticks, snowshoes, and cross-country skis that are available on rent. The Urho Kekkonen National Park is 5km away from this resort and is a great addition to your itinerary. There is no entry fee to the park and you take a bed in the reservation hut for just Rs.850 a night.

The resort is far from the chaos of the city, which makes it even more special. As long as you plan smartly, you can easily stay at the resort and experience the Northern Lights without exceeding your budget of Rs.5 lakh.
