An archipelago, Maldives is a perfect vacation spot for the whole family or a romantic destination for a couple.

Here’s how to plan a sunny getaway to the Maldives on a budget of less than Rs.6 lakh.

Plan your holiday well in advance

The perfect time to visit these islands is between December and March when the weather is at its sunny best. If you like to surf, plan a trip between March and October, though remember that it starts raining from May onwards. Remember that the earlier you book, the cheaper the fare will be. Round-trip airfare will cost you around Rs.50,000 for two. You can get your visa on arrival, so there’s no need to prepare in advance. Just carry your passport and the copies of

your hotel booking to get a visa without a hassle. Do keep Forex calculations in mind. You will be using Rufiyaa in Maldives and each Rufiyaa equals about Rs.4.

Food and entertainment

When you are visiting Maldives, don’t forget to try local specialities such as chicken curry and rice, as well as tuna fried rice. You must also sample snacks such as Maldivian Hedhikaa, a deep-fried dish made with smoked fish, lime, chilli and coconut, or Fihunumas, a peppery fish delicacy. If you are looking for a more familiar option, fish and chips is a dish that is served by almost all restaurants. A three-course meal for two will cost you around Rs.1,500.

As far as entertainment and activities go, Maldives has a lot to offer:

1. Visit the Grand Friday Mosque in Malé. It is a breath-taking structure made entirely out of white marble with a golden dome. The mosque is closed to non-Muslims 15 minutes before prayers and for the hour after, so time your visit accordingly, and ensure that you are appropriately dressed.

2. Maafushi is one of the largest islands in Maldives, and is perfect if you want to go snorkelling. Sign up for a snorkelling session for around Rs.2,500 per person.

3. If you have a special interest in marine life, head to Baa Atoll or Hanifaru Bay to dive with Manta Rays. A single dive will cost you around Rs.4,500–Rs.7,000, including costs for equipment.

4. To scuba dive, visit Ari Atoll. The region has 57 dive sites, including Maaya Thila, where you can scuba dive and swim alongside sharks. A single dive will cost you around Rs.10,000, but you can also book dive packages that are inclusive of stay. A 4-days, 3-nights package will cost you around Rs.62,000 and will include 4 dives.

To make the most of your holiday, all you have to do is budget smart and plan your trip in advance.
