FASTag Introduction – Electronic Toll Collection using FASTag on Highways?

FASTag is the new method of paying toll at a highway without having to stop at the toll plaza. These are prepaid rechargeable tags that can be pasted on a vehicle's windscreen. When the vehicle passes a toll plaza, the toll amount automatically gets deducted from the linked pre-paid wallet or the linked bank account.

From December 15, 2019, FASTag stickers have been made mandatory for all commercial and private vehicles. The ones without FASTags will need to pay twice the normal rate at toll plazas throughout India.

Benefits of Using FASTag

FASTag cards do not have an expiry date and you just need to recharge them from time to time. These cards rely on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to function. Other than saving fuel and time, this technology also helps reduce traffic. Here are a few other benefits that you should know about.

  • Ease in payment of toll: FASTag eliminates the need to pay cash at toll collection centres.

  • Ease in payment of toll: You can avail a cashback of 10% on using FASTag for the first one year on all toll payments across India.

  • Online recharge options: You can easily recharge your FASTag online through multiple payment options such as NEFT, Credit/Debit card, and Net banking.

  • Ease of Tracking: FASTag allows you to keep track of all transactions as you receive an SMS alert every time you transact at a toll plaza.

How to Buy or Apply for FASTag?

There are three ways to get FASTag:

  1. Apply at any of the select branches of 22 certified banks.

  2. Get it from any national highway toll plaza.

  3. Buy it from an e-commerce platform permitted to issue FASTags.

How to Activate FASTag using My FASTag App?

The easiest way to activate a FASTag card is through ‘My FASTag’ mobile app. All you have to do is fill in your vehicle details and link your FASTag to one of your existing bank accounts or avail the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) prepaid wallet facility. You can load the wallet with your desired amount (up to the predefined limit) and your toll fee will get deducted from the same. The app is available on Google Play for Android users and App Store for iPhone users.
Another way to activate FASTag is by visiting a certified bank branch and getting your FASTag card linked with your existing bank account. As per the respective bank’s KYC policy, you need to submit KYC documents along with your vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) and an application for activating FASTag.

What are the charges associated with FASTag?

Although certified banks can define the FASTag card issuing charges, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has fixed the upper limit for this price to Rs. 100 per tag. Other charges are added on this, including the bank’s security deposit and charge for the first recharge in the wallet. Top-up charges also vary from bank to bank. These can be known from their official websites.
The toll rates, on the other hand, are subject to multiple factors such as length and width of the road, infrastructure like tunnels and bridges, and others. The provisions of concession agreement may also affect the rates.

How to Recharge FASTag Online?

If you have linked your FASTag card to the NHAI prepaid wallet, it can be recharged like any other prepaid wallet – pay through cheque, UPI, debit card, credit card, NEFT or Net Banking. These channels might attract certain additional charges.
If you have linked your card directly with your bank account, there is no question of recharging it. Your FASTag payment will be automatically made from your account. All you need to do is make sure that your bank account has sufficient balance.
In case the ETC equipment malfunctions or does not process your payment, you can make the payment in cash at the toll plaza. Also, to report the deduction of an incorrect amount at a toll plaza, you may reach out to the dedicated customer care team who will resolve the issue by making necessary refunds.
