If this sounds familiar, then you probably know what we are talking about - gift card scams. There are myriad scams that ask people to make payments via email, text, or phone for items or services such as taxes, vehicles, utility bills as well as debt collection.

Fraudsters usually employ several methods to conduct scams which also includes requesting gift cards, claiming to be from popular and well-to-do brands for payment. Hence, be it your EMI card or other super card, it is very important to ensure that you are aware of such scams to prevent misuse of your cards and hard-earned cash.

Voucher gift card scams usually begin with the fraudster hosting a website on Google or Bing (for example - freecoupons.com). Soon after, these fraudsters ask their potential victims to pay a certain sum of money to claim a voucher worth Rs. 10,000. Once you click on the link, the first thing the website will ask you for is your card credentials. Once you enter these details, the fraudster will immediately capture them and for all we know, they may even shop through it. Once the card is used by these fraudsters, the victim will receive the OTP of these transactions and then enter it on the same website. And because the website is under the fraudster's control, they will be able to read everything you enter on the site.

How does one stay protected?

  • You must understand that Bajaj Finance is NOT into gifting cards. And as for the users’ “Voucher Rewards”, these can be redeemed via the Experia portal only. You must make it a point to not share your personal information on any website at all.

  • Ensure that you do not provide the details on the back of the gift card or codes received via email as promotional offers to someone that you do not know or trust. Because once the fraudster receives the promotional code, the funds on the card will most likely be spent even before you can contact the gift-card company.

  • You must also make sure that you do not share your Bajaj Finance EMI card credentials, your RBL Supercard PIN, or your passwords with anybody at all
