5 Lesser-known Contributions of Indian Engineers

India is home to countless inventions that have placed us at the top of the global game. Indians have contributed some of the most revolutionary inventions to the world!

Inventions that were once considered to be items of luxury have now become irreplaceable parts of our day-to-day lives.

1. USB: Yes! The widely used “pen-drive” technology was developed by an Indian graduate, Ajay Bhatt as a Chief I/O Architect at Intel. The Indian graduate contributed to technologies like AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port), PCI Express, Platform Power management architecture and several other chipset enhancements as well.

2. HDTV: Our television experience was transformed by an IITian named ArunNetravalli. The HDTV technology now widely used by hundreds of channels for their broadcasts was developed at Bell Labs in 1990, where Netravalli worked in the capacity of President. His technology shifted television from analog to digital.

3. Google News: Another Indian rules Google! Krishna Bharat developed the automated news aggregator popularly known as Google News. The technology pulls news automatically from various news sources with the help of the algorithm written by him. Krishna Bharat headed the operations atGoogle’s R&D Centre in Bengaluru for 18 months.

4. Fiber Optics: Known as the “Light Bender”, Dr. Narinder Kapany invented the fiber optic cable which transformed the fields of data, video transmission and even medicine. He is knownfor his view that light need not travel in a straight line, but it can be bent. His invention has been particularly beneficial in the world of medicine where it is used for endoscopy and bronchoscopy.

5. Pentium Processors: A very popular name in the computer world is the father of Pentium Microprocessor Chip, Vinod Dham. His inventions are known to rule the computer world even today.The co-inventor of the popularly known SD card announced his position as the co-founder of Acadgild with an aim to teach computer programming to anyone interested to adapt to the world that is rapidly evolving.
