Know More About MTF

Have you ever missed a good trading opportunity just because you were low on funds at that moment? If you had an opportunity to Pay Later (MTF - Margin Trading Facility), this would have never happened. Pay Later (MTF) allows you to buy a stock by paying just a fraction of the total transaction value.

Margin Trading Facility (MTF) allows investors to buy stocks by partially funding the purchase through the broker, leveraging their investments. It helps in maximizing returns by providing higher buying power with limited upfront capital. Additionally, MTF offers flexibility in holding positions longer without immediate full payment, making it useful for short- to medium-term opportunities.

To buy under MTF, you need to activate the Margin Trading Facility with your broker by signing the agreement and ensuring margin requirements are met. Once enabled, you can purchase eligible stocks by paying only a part of the value, while the broker funds the rest. The bought shares are held as collateral until you repay the borrowed amount.

Do’s and Don’ts

No Data is available

  • Trade wisely. Opt for Pay Later (MTF) after doing your homework and ensuring that the trade is right for you.

  • Understand the product and all its terms, including interest rates, repayment conditions, and risks involved.

  • Use MTF for short-term, high-conviction trades where you have confidence in the stock's performance.

  • Monitor your portfolio regularly and ensure sufficient margin to avoid forced square-offs.

  • Use broker tools and enable alerts to stay informed about your margin status and market movements.

  • Don’t ignore any margin shortfall. In case of a margin shortfall, the shares will be squared off 4 trading days after the shortfall has occurred.

  • Don’t use MTF for long-term investing, as interest costs can eat into your returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MTF?

Margin Trading Facility (MTF) allows investors to purchase shares by paying only a portion of the total value while the broker funds the remaining amount. The shares bought are kept as collateral with the broker until the loaned amount is cleared. This facility gives investors the advantage of leveraging their capital to take bigger positions in the market.

What is the interest rate of MTF?

The interest charged on MTF depends on the broker and usually ranges from 8% to 18% annually. It is calculated on the borrowed portion of the investment on a daily basis and billed monthly. The effective cost varies with the size of the margin used and the holding period.

Can we sell MTF stock?

Yes, MTF stocks can be sold at any time during market hours like normal holdings. Once sold, the proceeds first go towards repaying the borrowed margin. After settlement, any remaining balance is transferred to your trading account.

How long can I hold MTF shares?

You can hold MTF shares as long as you continue to maintain the required margin balance and pay the applicable interest. While some brokers may impose restrictions or timelines, in general holdings can extend for weeks or months. If margin requirements are not met, the broker may square off your position.

Is MTF only for intraday?

No, MTF is not limited to intraday trading—it is designed for carrying forward positions beyond a single day. Unlike intraday trades that must be closed before market close, MTF lets you hold leveraged positions longer. This makes it suitable for short- to medium-term investment strategies.

Does MTF share get dividends?

Yes, dividends and corporate actions such as bonus shares, rights issues, and stock splits are passed on to you since you remain the beneficial owner. However, some brokers may adjust dividend payouts against any outstanding margin or interest dues. Thus, while benefits are received, their utilization may depend on your broker’s settlement policies.
